He had wanted to visit England one day. It had been forty years since he left England, and now he planned to visit his childhood home in Ottery St. Mary, Devon with his three daughters. Son Dede had visited Devon during the war as a "Yank" army private and caused a small scandal for conservative Cousin Eva who proudly displayed "her yank". Charles introduced his daughters to his cousin Eva Pavey and Jack Salter and his wife in the village of Ottery St. Mary, Devon. Charles' return visit to England was memorable and greatly enjoyed. Here Cousin Barbara Wheeler and Joan Gosling were thrilled to meet their American cousins and vice versa! While on his return trip back to Hong Kong in September 1951, Charles was able to attend the wedding of his son Dede to Jean Stockwell, a UCLA sorority of Janet's. Grace remained in Hong Kong in his absence. Dede then proceeded to graduate school at the University of Maryland with Jean and began his studies in theoretical physics which culminated in a double Ph.D. in 1955 in Particl_e Physics and Math. In 1953, daughter Jean was married to Don Eckelmann. Grace and Charles were both able to attend the wedding in Glendale, California, while daughter Joyce had already gone to India as a missionary nurse with the Presbyterian Church, and daughter Janet became a junior high teacher in Los Angeles City Schools. Later, in 1954, Miriam and family of 4 children returned from two years in Edinburgh, Scotland where John received his Ph.D. in theology in 1953, and they were to pastor the Granada Hills Presbyterian Church for the next 20 years. Faith and husband, George, with 2 boys now settled in San Diego. "Bud" in business and Faith as a nurse. Hong Kong now had millions of refugees living in squalor conditions while the government struggled to build decent high-rise apartments. Charles organized a staff of doctors and nurses, supported by the church, to reach out to these people in two different areas. The local government provided financial support for an elementary school which the members of Emmanuel Church supervised under the capable supervision of Mrs. Beatrice Wong.

Emmanuel Church meanwhile was outgrowing its facilities for Sunday worship. For nine years Charles and Grace continued their ministry and built two Christian schools and
