another medical clinic as part of Emmanuel Church's ministry in the Kowloon City area near the airport. They also organized the Emmanuel Primary School (grades 1-6) and a medical clinic in Deep Well, a fishing and industrial working center. They lived out by Deep Well the last 8 years along the beach area since Charles always loved the sea and fishing and having a dog for company, Rosemary. It reminded him of his few years in Exwick and early years in Devon when he always had a dog! An ting Cheng spent one and a half years in London nursing school, but met and married Lieh-ling Cheng, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines in England and son of a , wealthy Chinese merchant in the Philippines. Most of their early years were spent in Singapore and Malaysia raising 5 children. An Shuen married her high school sweetheart, Matthew Leong, who became a highly successful businessman and they raised two boys, Philip and Samuel. These two daughters of his beloved friend and co-worker at H.B.I., Professor Gih-Kwei, were his pride and joy. Their faithful love and appreciation of him all the last years were a great source of contentment. In 1963 at the age of 67, and after 47 years in China, Charles was still in good health while Grace had borderline diabetes. He decided to retire and turn the Emmanuel work over to the Chinese leaders he had trained. They took a slow trip home to San Clemente, California by way of India and Europe with a last visit to England, staying with friends along the way and spending time with daughter Joyce in India and visiting Kashmir with her. Charles said his last 13 years of ministry-were the most satisfying and rewarding of his professional life. He often remarked that he now realized that all his early difficult life, and years, and tragedies, and crises, and losses were preparation for these final rewarding years in Hong Kong ministry. In his earlier years, his ministry included many experiences with the rural Chinese churches, teaching and administrative frustrations, and working with government personnel and non-government agencies. He understood and loved the Chinese culture and mind. Thus he was well able to share with these intelligent people with a great historical culture the richness of the Christian faith, and he was rewarded by them with remarkable long term true friendships. 27 RETIREMENT IN CALIFORNIA
