Despite what my kids may think, being a grown-up doesn’t mean you get to stop going to school. In fact, if you’re a dentist, continuing education is a big part of your year. My team and I have attended a number of courses, usually within a 2 to 3 hour drive. But this summer, we were able to attend a big Invisalign course in Las Vegas. Emily, Taylor, Lauren, Lexi, and I all flew out to spend a few days learning about the latest advancements in Invisalign technology. I really enjoy attending continuing education courses because the other attendees and the people

enjoyed the lazy river, and played top golf! This trip was extra special because it was the last hurrah before Emily left us to start dental school, so I’m glad they were able to have some fun together. This was probably one of our most successful continuing education courses in a while. Being in Vegas was pretty cool, but more importantly, we learned something new about a technology we use in our office all the time. After a continuing education course, I never plan on coming back with a massive textbook full of notes, but if I walk away with one piece of information that’s able to help my patients, I call it a win.

teaching the course are really jazzed about being there. It was really cool to talk with people from other offices around the country and hear how they’re using braces-free orthodontics to help their patients. Our goal was to come back home with new ways to use this technology better. Now, I know what you’re waiting for. What kind of wild adventures did we get into in Las Vegas? To be honest, my biggest adventure was staying up until 11 p.m. to attend the dinner with everyone. That’s a good two hours past my bedtime! I’m not what you’d call a “Vegas kind of guy.” My team has

said that if we ever went out on the town together, they’d drop me off at a museum first and pick me up when they were done. I have no complaints with this plan, so you’ll understand why I didn’t hang around the tables after the course was done. I left on Friday night because that Saturday was my birthday, and I wanted to be home for the one day everyone in my house is forced to be nice to me (not that my family isn’t always nice to me, of course). However, the rest of the team stuck around for a few extra days and did get to enjoy a real Vegas weekend. They walked the strip, hit the slots,

Being required to attend more school after you’ve already spent around two decades learning isn’t everyone’s idea of fun, but I enjoy it. I love everything about being a dentist, from working with patients to learning something new about Invisalign. I don’t know what I’d do if I weren’t a dentist. It’s what gets me up and going in the morning. Being a dentist is who I am, and I enjoy every moment.

The Right Tool for the Job Technology makes organization easier and more accessible than ever. By using a tool like a shared calendar, you can coordinate the entire family’s schedule so you never miss a beat. And apps like Mealime and MealBoard give you the ability to whip up food that is cost-effective and delicious. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work While you’re busy trying to rally the troops at soccer practice, the scene at home resembles a horror movie. Laundry is piling up, food is spoiling in the fridge, and the dust bunnies around the house now have names. Housecleaning is a part-time job in its own right. The only way to stay on top of duties around the house is to work together. A chore chart with clear responsibilities is a great place to start. Whether you have one child or eight, everyone is capable of pitching in. You can have all the organizational abilities in the world, but the best way to manage life’s madness isn’t by directing day-to-day tasks; it’s by managing stress. Instead of using these tools to control life, look at them as a way to free up time so you can decompress and enjoy the things you love.

Need a Personal Assistant to Manage Your Kids’ Crazy Schedules?

TRY THESE 3 TIPS INSTEAD

Tag Team There’s no reason to try to do everything on your own. The phrase “It takes a village to raise a child” exists because managing the stressors of life requires help. A great place to start is by establishing car pools with a parent group you trust. You can alternate drivers weekly, which provides the opportunity for you to focus your attention on other priorities — or if you’re lucky, have some freedom.

School has started. Youth sports are in full swing. Work is crazy. Food has become more about necessity than enjoyment. All of this can only mean one thing: Fall has begun. The crazy schedules this time of year can make it tough for parents to keep their heads on straight; making it through the insanity sometimes feels more like survival than life. But there are tactics you can employ to turn the tide and find more time for yourself.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

“It was 20-plus years between dentist visits because my previous experience was so bad. I’m glad to be here now. Dr. Schermer and especially Janae have taken excellent care of me and made me enjoy going to the dentist once again. Thank you!” -Keith P. The entire experience at Dr. Jason’s office is outstanding. From the confirmation call through the checkout/rescheduling process, everyone takes the time to answer any questions you may have and explain anything that requires an explanation. The kindness of every staff member and the excellent dental work they provide are second to none! -James R.

I live in Stow, and when I tell people where my dentist’s office is, they exclaim, “But that’s so far!” I’m forced to reply, “Yeah, but they are the best!” — which is, in my experience, a factual statement. The doctors and hygienists are exceedingly

knowledgeable, highly skilled, and never fail to impress. The equipment is modern and the atmosphere pleasant. I can enthusiastically recommend their practice. -Eric C.

Whitening Treatment The holidays are coming up, and that means lots of photos. From Halloween costumes and Christmas cards to year-end snapshots on New Year’s Eve, the last thing you want is to see pictures of yourself on social media and think, “Yikes!” Our Zoom! in-office whitening system is one of the most convenient whitening treatments available today. Just one office visit removes years of stains, giving you a bright, beautiful smile before you need to pick up your kids from football practice. Invisalign Orthodontics aren’t just for teens, but most parents are understandably hesitant to have metal braces strapped to their teeth. Fortunately, clear Invisalign trays are nearly invisible. Your own kids probably won’t even

During the summer months, the family schedule is pretty much run by the kids. Routine goes out the door, and you’re flying by the seat of your pants. Once school starts back up, you finally have a second to breathe and catch up on the to-do list you’ve been putting off. If going to your dental checkups got put on the back burner this summer, take advantage of the start of the new school year to take care of yourself. Improving your smile may take less time than you think. Fillings Does your tooth hurt when you bite down? Do you try to drink hot coffee on only one side of your mouth? Does food get caught somewhere it shouldn’t? If you spent all summer ignoring a problem cavity, make an appointment to get your filling now. Otherwise, you could end up dealing with oral pain during Thanksgiving dinner.

notice you’re wearing them! Plus, in most cases, Invisalign treatment is over in as little as six months. Get your appointments over with and start enjoying a dazzling, straight smile before school lets out next spring. Parents put their kids first in all things, but when it comes to your health, you can only put your own needs off for so long before an emergency takes you away from your family when they need you. Oral health plays a huge role in your overall health, so make sure you are scheduling your appointments to take care of your teeth before it’s too late.

Have You Heard About Mauritius?

MARVELOUS MAURITIUS A SECRET ISLAND OF ADVENTURE

Taste the Memories A day spent playing on an island is always better with great food. Influenced by its French, Creole, Indian, and Chinese heritage, Mauritius offers a vast menu of delicious dishes to try, from curry to dim sum. And the rich soil and bountiful ocean provide more than enough fresh fruit and seafood to go around. Despite its amazing vacation potential, Mauritius is all but unheard of to people in the United States. This means travelers can find amazing five-star resorts at unbeatable prices! With this in mind, isn’t it time you got to know the island of Mauritius?

Just over 1,000 miles off the southeastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean lies the small island of Mauritius. The island is often overlooked by the rest of the world. Most people are more likely to have heard of the island’s most famous extinct occupant, the dodo bird, than the island itself. This is shocking when you discover how much fun there is to be had in this tropical wonderland. Adventure Awaits Looking for fun in the sun? Start your trip to Mauritius with a hike up the lush Lion Mountain, or take time to snap a photo of the Seven Coloured Earths, where volcanic soil has created sand dunes of seven distinct colors. And what’s a trip to an island without the beach? Beautiful

coral reefs surround Mauritius, keeping sharks away from the pristine beaches. Island guests and locals can fearlessly scuba dive around the brilliant reefs, swim with dolphins, kite surf, and find lots of other ways to enjoy the warm ocean waters. Walk Through History More than a tropical escape, Mauritius is an island full of history and culture, so there are plenty of opportunities to learn about the island’s layered past. You can visit one of the historical rummeries or explore Mauritius’ two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can also check out Aapravasi Ghat, the Immigration Depot, and Le Mourne Brabant.
