allocation of some existing equipment. “Frankly, having it all in Livermore doesn’t really serve our purpose. We need to have a broader footprint. With freight being so volatile, we’ll be much better off having digital machines spread out throughout the company.” Elaborating further about his vision for digital, he says, “My strategy is not to sell 50 boxes to Aunt Kathy’s Knit- ting Club. That’s not our model but there are people out there who have that model and have done a ton of work in automation and workflow to make that feasible. It’s a tremendously good business if you’re properly set up for it,” he continues. “Our strategy is to be a high volume, high graphic supplier that blankets the West Coast – anywhere within two to three days’ trucking from here.” He says they have shipped into Mexico, Canada and the Eastern U.S. “Digital really does travel very well.”

So where is the growth in digital orders going to come from? Fellows says the sky is the limit. “Some people ask me to define a digital customer. It’s changing to the point where almost every customer could be a digital customer.” Golden West has nearly 70 sales representatives, in- cluding several “digital champions” at every plant who work closely with Fellows to educate customers about the value of digital printing. “We run 197 line screen direct print on the Göpfert on Kemi. If you had asked me 15 years ago, ‘Could I run 197 line screen flexographically’? I would have said ‘no.’ That technology has changed. Digital technolo- gy has changed even more. It’s evolutionary. Right now, major CPG companies are seeking out digital for certain product lines. They understand digital’s value as far as speed to market, flexibility in printing, less obsolescence and becoming faster,” he says. Nonetheless, Fellows remains the consummate sales person. “I’m a huge believer in digital. I think it is transfor- mative, but when it comes to what a customer wants, I’m print agnostic.” An operator sets up the next job on the HP Digital Press
