COMMUNITY LEADER AWARD Jondea Mon
As you navigate through life, it becomes integral to recognize your roots and the community you come from. Jondea comes from an ethnic group called Mon originating from the country of Myanmar. Miss Mon is currently majoring in Biology at IUPUI for undergrad and plans to apply to medical school sometime soon. Her career ambitions are to provide care for the underrepresented groups and help address health disparities that exist. However, with her time here at IUPUI she hopes to have had some role in building a community through her executive board positions with Myanmar Student Organization, the Minority Association of Premedical students and as a Learning Assistant for Introduction of Psychology. Outside of our campus, she is also an avid member of the Mon youth organization and the Mon funeral aid association of Fort Wayne. Where they advocate for culture and help members of the Mon community deal with the death of a loved one. When she reflects on her experiences, she feels proud to be a part of these supportive communities both culturally and academically. It has nurtured her innate joy of helping and building connection. “It is the roots which give a tree strength, not its branches.¨ - Matshona Dhliwayo
