The cost of Family coverage is an especially significant expense for lower-wage earners. Considering the financial impact of Family coverage, the reality may be that employees needing this coverage may not be able to afford it. As a result, lower-wage earners may seek Medicaid coverage as an alternative or seek another job with a competing employer. MEDICAID PARTICIPATION According to the Louisiana Department of Health, there are 1,607 classified employees participating in Medicaid as of January 2026. The AS pay schedule has the highest Medicaid participation at 429 employees and the TS pay schedule has the lowest Medicaid participation at 38 employees. Overall, Medicaid participation for all pay schedules has decreased since last year, with the SS pay schedule showing the largest decrease at 89 fewer employees. Graph 25 provides an overview of Medicaid participation counts by pay schedule over the last two years.
