Functional overview of the Rotary Vane Steering Gear system with key control and power components

Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU)
Alarm & Control System ՟ Receives commands from the vessel control system (FFU / NFU / Autopilot) and executes them - 'turn starboard (SPB)' or 'turn portside (PS)' ՟ Alarm & control panels monitor the connected components, indicate warnings and failures and enable the user to switch the HPUs on or off ՟ One alarm panel in the engine control room (ECR) monitors the connected components and indicates warnings as well as failures ՟ In case of emergency, the steering gear can be controlled by a terminal box near the rudder actuator (with starter box switched to ‘local operation’)
՟ Each HPU is equipped with at least one oil tank, one electrical motor and one hydraulic pump ՟ Safety valves protect the actuator from overload pressure ՟ Uses a closed-loop hydraulic system with a variable displacement pump, suitable for torque up to 500 kNm. ՟ Temperature sensor and oil-level switches provide monitoring information for the alarm system ՟ Up to two HPUs can be mounted on one transport grid (see figure) BRIDGE STEERING GEAR PUMP 2 ALARM & CONTROL HPU 1
