Unicorns Real or Fantasy?
T he earliest written description of the unicorn dates back to ancient times. Ctesias, a Greek Historian who traveled through what used to be Persia, wrote of all the things he saw. These ‘things’ included fast creatures with long horns and either white, red, or black bodies. Due to the fact that most knowledge of the unicorns came from travelers, Ctesias may have combined multiple descriptions into one. Due to all of the stories that were told, unicorns were considered real, therefore, the Greeks wrote unicorns into their natural history! The thing is, many real-life animals have horns so it is possible that people saw these animals and mistook them as unicorns. It was believed that unicorn horns held special healing powers, which caused everyone to become very desperate for one. Merchants would sell Narwhal tusks by lying and claiming that they were unicorn horns. Narwhal tusks could easily be sold as unicorn horns. They were straight, white and a spiral. This was when the long, white, spiral horn became part of the official ‘look’ of the unicorn. The Kingdom of Denmark became so obsessed with these alleged ‘unicorn horns’ that they created an entire
THRONE out of ‘unicorn horns’. The king did this to compete with other royals since they would merely buy a horn and stick it in a cabinet for show. The royals of Scotland especially were obsessed, though. They not only made the unicorn their ‘Coat of Arms’, or their symbol, they also made it Scotland’s national animal! Just like how the Bald Eagle is America’s! Even now in modern times, unicorns still fascinate us. Just last year, in Caithness, Scotland, a man claims that he saw a unicorn! Now, multiple people in his town have claimed to seeing it! Most people think I am crazy for thinking this but I, personally, believe in unicorns. But that is my personal opinion. What do you think? Are unicorns real or are they merely fantasy?
Solution from page 8
A furry rhino thing with a horn on its forehead. A bearded, cloven-hoofed goat. A wild donkey with dark blue eyes, a red head, and a white body. A majestic white horse with a spiral horn. All very different yet each, in fact, a unicorn.
