The Story of Let’s Talk Trash -News!

As we all know, frequency is the key to making a long lasting impression. I had the pleasure of meeting David McCullough for the first time as he campaigned for Mayor in 2010 and quickly found him to be a man dedicated to the county as well as a strong supporter of our schools. In 2012, he recognized an opportunity to share litter education through a publication that was distributed free to all schools in the county in order to help them become more aware about the littering problem that exists. As a result, Let’s Talk Trash was “coined” and has grown into the K-8th grade educational component and the Museum of Litter Art Project (Iris Tennessee-Cheatham and Bee Passionate Tennesse-Cheatham) has become the bi-annual school wide K-12th grade art project that raises thousands of dollars for our schools. This anti litter educational program continues today with the support of the T.D.O.T. county litter grant by the mayor’s office and area business sponsorships.

David McCullough’s support for our kids was unbounding. The first Mayor’s Back to School Bash was started in August 2013. For the first year David and I discussed the potential of how many would attend. To our great surprise, there were hundreds who showed up waiting in a line for more than two hours wrapping around the courthouse, in the rain I might add , to gather free school supplies. David and I looked at each other and could not believe the need was so great. It was bigger than either one of us could have imagined. The Back to School Bash has continued each year since then and is now under the leadership of the Cheatham County Chamber and supported by area businesses. The continuation of these programs is part of making a frequent, long lasting impression on our youth. I was so honored to know and work with such a dedicated statesman because that is what David truly was - a skilled, experienced, and respected political leader with a bedrock of principles, a moral compass, a vision, and the ability to build a consensus to achieve that vision. - Debbie Keenan, Editor/Publisher
