Licensed Professional Counselors are known for providing counsel, meaning that they are often approached by those needing answers, insight or input. In fact, most seeking the services of a Counselor are struggling with choices in some form or fashion. Some are facing a dilemma in which a difficult It’s all About Choices

It becomes routine. School, work, home, ect. You’re out and about. You’re having fun, right? Although, did you realize what your friend did? Did you see the trash tossed out the window? What about a couple of days later? When the bag begins to fall apart. Each piece going seperate ways. One going into the traffic and wrapping around wheels of cars. The second floats through the breeze into a nearby ditch. The third swept into a neighbor’s beautifully built garden. Another into a stream and carried to a much distant location by water. It flows into the general habitat of us all. It masks the beauty with stench

choice must be made between two or more equally undesirable alternatives while others are seeking services due to the consequences imposed by their own choices or by the choices of others. Choices are universal in that we all have to make them each day. Some are big and some are small. As young people, you are likely to feel like you don’t have a choice as you have people in authority over you such as your parents and your teachers; however, that simply isn’t true. You ALWAYS have a choice . Not only do you have a choice, you have several. While it’s true that adults have more freedoms, it’s also true that adults are under authority just like you! While you are tasked with choosing whether or not to obey your parents and teachers, adults are tasked with choosing whether or not to obey the government or their bosses. It’s important to remember that every choice you make will do one of two things: It will either move you closer to or further away from where you want to be. For instance, let’s take a typical afternoon. You arrive home after school with a lot of homework and find that you have the house to yourself. Your Mom has told you to do your homework first, but you’d rather do something else. Besides, you just got home from a long day of school. Instantly, you are faced with a choice. What to do? First, consider your options. You could lay down and take a nap or play on your phone or watch your favorite T.V. show. After all, no one is home so they won’t know if you are doing homework or not. These are among some of the hardest choices we make each day like choosing to do what you don’t feel like doing all because it’s the right thing to do. Why is it the right thing? Again, if it moves you closer to your goal, it’s the right thing. If your goal is to keep all your privileges, it may be wise to do as your Mom told you. If your goal is to have your parents continue to trust you, again, it may be wise to do as Mom said. Ultimately, it’s the small day to day choices we make that oftentimes have the biggest positive impact on our lives. You see, every choice involves a sacrifice as well. When you choose to obey your Mom and do your homework first, you are actually creating a positive habit that may follow you for years to come. Work first and then play. When you choose to obey, you are sacrificing doing what you want in the moment and instead choosing to invest in yourself by developing greater self-control which is a sign of maturity. The next time you are faced with doing something you don’t want to do, remember that you have a choice and remind yourself of your goal. It will make doing the hard things a little easier!

and destruction. What about now? Did you see that ?
