November 2016, I reached out to the Central Office to seek out High School students in Cheatham County who may be interested in a writing opportunity for Let’s Talk Trash-News. It would be kids writing for kids! English teacher at Cheatham County Central High School, Rick Amburgey, responded immediately and invited me to speak to his students. After several presentations, I was encouraged with the number of students who stepped up and were excited about the opportunity to be published. I encouraged them with the fact that everyone has a story that needs to be told which became the key to their contributions. What an opportunity for these kids to be a part of something that they can carry forward in their college and or job applications as published writers! To further their commitment, an editorial staff meeting was held in February at Community Bank and Trust’s board room, where we discussed and planned future issues together. Being a part of an editorial staff in a professional environment made this project for these kids exciting and meaningful to the point that they were suggesting articles and activities instead of being lead. Whether they were aware or not, they were actually in the process of becoming leaders! We had so much fun, or should I say, “I HAD SO MUCH FUN!” As I observed their enthusiasm, discover, willingness, and intelligence, it became quite clear that these kids are shining stars worthy of attention and recognition! It became a discovery for me as well, as I found that their “hands” are full of hope, surprise, wonder, and curiosity. How they will choose their future is in the hands of all of us as well. The most influential, their teacher, Rick Amburgey has been a blessing providing ways to open these kids’ eyes to what lies ahead and what they can actively do to make a difference in their futures.
