budget of the church (when this is done the Sunday school will be more conscious that it is a part of the church), or let all the Sunday school offerings go to missions (this plan will teach missionary giving from earliest childhood to latest adulthood). 7. Effective Evangelism. While the Sunday school is not primarily an evangelistic organization, it constitutes our greatest home missionary challenge. The Sunday school is the only school that is designed to meet the spiritual needs of the individual from the cradle to the grave. So, just when the individual is ready to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, he is - y or should be — in some department of the Sunday school. But, alas, sta tistics reveal that only ten per cent of Christian converts are won through the Sunday school. Why? Because the teacher is the key to Sunday school evangelism, but, sad to say, the average Sunday school teacher does not know how to lead an anxious soul to Christ. If we are going to have a Sunday school worthy of the name, we must train our teachers to be soul-winners. 8. A Sustained Effort to Reach Our Constituency. We talk about foreign missions not keeping pace with the birth rate, but do you know that the Sunday school enrollment in the United States is not keeping up with the growth in population? From 1936 to 1956 the popula tion of the U. S. A. increased 40 million, but the Sunday school enrollment in the nation increased only 20 million.
Less than one out of every four in our country is receiving any kind of formal religious instruction. What is your Sunday school doing to reach these unreached, unevange lized, untaught masses? The over-all aim of the Sunday school should be to reach, hold, win, teach, and train. But to do these things we must have consecrated trained teachers, efficient or ganization and administration; a Christ-centered, Bible- centered, pupil-centered curriculum; satisfactory meas urements of pupil accomplishments; adequate housing and equipment; sufficient financing; effective evangelism; and a sustained effort to reach our constituency. When we meet these standards, we shall have “ school” in Sun day school. 'For years the Evangelical Teacher Training Association, Wheaton, Illinois, has been promoting teacher training courses; they have six that lead to their primary certificate, and six more that lead to their advanced certificate, all of which may be taken through the Biola Correspondence School. Now the Biola Evening School is developing twelve courses that lead to their Teacher Training -Diploma for Sunday School Teachers. Most good denominational publishing houses have excellent material for teacher training. 2The Six Point Record System is a system of grading S. S. pupils by giving them 20% for attendance (sometimes this is as high as 30% ), 10% for being on time, 10% for bringing a Bible, 10% for giving an offering; 30% for having a prepared lesson, and 20% for attending a worship service (when 30% is given for attendance only 10% is given for worship).
