PATIENT OF THE MONTH

Sam has 13 years of experience as a lighting technician helping produce commercials and films. The Dark Knight and Transformers are movies he provided the electrical equipment for and even explained how the exciting explosions in the movies were staged! Talk about an exciting job. Sam is currently staying busy helping plan a festival in the town where he lives, along with learning how to wood work and playing bass guitar. Sam has chosen Riley’s Children’s Hospital as the charity to donate $100 towards. He has fundraised before for Riley’s and personally knows patients that have been treated at Riley’s Children’s Hospital. OBTS wants to thank Sam for being an awesome patient and a joy to talk with!

Meet Sam Andrzejewski, our patient of the month. Sam came to Orthopedic and Balance Therapy Specialists after being referred by his doctor. He unfortunately hurt his shoulder trying to recover a falling tent that was above his head. The tent fell on his shoulder causing pain and what the doctor thinks is a torn muscle. Sam is prepared to go in for surgery later this year to have the muscle repaired. He went through therapy at another clinic, but found that OBTS has been focused on treating the problem areas and not always working one area. Sam stated that the PTs and PTAs are spot on when treating his painful areas. He enjoys the attention he receives from all the staff at OBTS and has noticed increased range of motion and less pain since starting physical therapy.

October Is National Physical Therapy Month! National Physical Therapy Month is celebrated in the United States each October. The goal of the month-long celebration is to raise awareness of the important role that physical therapists and physical therapy assistants play in helping people decrease pain, improve mobility, and engage in healthy lifestyles. The APTA also has specific PT Month logos for free use by members of the organization. These logos can be used electronically on websites or on signage during the month of October to increase community outreach.

The History of National Physical Therapy Month Initially, National Physical Therapy Week was celebrated each June starting in 1981. In 1992, the week was moved to October so as to not conflict with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) national conference in June. It was then declared that the entire month of October would be designated National Physical Therapy Month. National Physical Therapy Month is a recognized observance on the National Health Observances Calendar. How Is National Physical Therapy Month Celebrated? If you have been a physical therapy patient during the month of October, there is a good chance that the clinic you went to was celebrating National Physical Therapy Month. Often, staff members wear shirts with the APTA logo, and many times small gifts are given to patients promoting the month.

During National Physical Therapy Month physical therapists are encouraged to engage their communities in activities to promote healthy lifestyles and to raise awareness of the importance of physical therapy. Clinics may hold special events like posture screenings, balance assessments, or fun runs to get the community involved in fitness and exercise. National Physical Therapy Month is a wonderful opportunity for physical therapists to educate the public about the role that physical therapists play in helping to manage pain, improve mobility, and restore function. Be sure to visit your local physical therapist in October to see what he or she may have planned for National Physical Therapy Month.

An insurance deductible is the amount of money that you must pay before your insurance company pays for your medical services. If your deductible is met, your Physical Therapy may not cost you anything. Patients with family plans or those who have had major surgeries or have a chronic illness are especially likely to have a $0 balance remaining on their out-of- pocket expenses. This means that the cost of physical therapy could be minimal or completely covered by the patient’s insurance plan. If you are close to or have met your insurance deductable for the year, then now is the time to come in for Physical Therapy! Are you feeling aches & pains? Need to work on your core? Let us help you get a head start for 2018. Contact us today to schedule your appointment. Have you met your annual insurance deductible?

Why knowing the cause of your back pain or sciatica is important… When you know the cause of your back pain and sciatica, then it’s much easier to do the right treatment to get back to normal…and heal naturally. However, finding the exact CAUSE of your lower back pain and sciatica can be tricky…because some back pain and sciatica sufferers can have more than 1 CAUSE! That’s right…they have no symptoms and yet the MRI shows a bulging disc!) • How to match the right treatment to the exact cause of your symptoms (this is where most patients get poor results… when the correct treatment is not matched to the correct cause). • Simple self-help techniques that will help you handle your lower back and sciatica without medications, injections, or surgery The dates and locations of the free consultations are as follows: • Valparaiso: Monday October 16. The Top 3 Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica

Dear Valued Client, Back pain and sciatica can be one of the most frustrating problems to deal with…leading to pain killers, expensive MRIs, multiple injections, and even surgery. What’s worse is that many times these costly procedures do not lead to being pain free…or even less pain OR relief… leading to frustration…feeling like life is passing you by…and depression. BUT from experience of helping over 2000 patients with back pain and sciatica heal naturally without medications, injections, or surgery…I can share that in every case the person got back to normal because the CAUSE of their back pain and sciatica was addressed correctly. So what causes back pain and sciatica? From my experience, there are 3 most common causes we see at Orthopedic and Balance Therapy: Cause #1: Stenosis, Arthritis, DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease) Pain with standing and walking? Less pain when you sit down? 50 or more candles on your next birthday cake? If you answered Yes to these 3 questions, then there’s a 99% chance the cause of your back pain or sciatica is stenosis, arthritis or DDD. Sufferers with this cause may also have lower back stiffness when they first get out of bed in the morning…and may need to “move around” for 15 minutes…or get a hot shower before they loosen up. They usually have trouble being on their feet for long times…and need to “sit down for a minute” to get relief. This is the person who needs to lean forward on the grocery cart to make it through the store. Cause #2: Herniated Discs or Pinched Nerves Sufferers with herniated discs are usually younger…40 years of age or younger…and have sharp pain down the back of their leg when they bend forward or lift. As a general rule, the further down the leg they have pain, numbness or tingling…the more pressure they’re putting on their nerve. They have pain bending forward…and usually relief bending backwards or standing. Cause #3: (See back of flier to see how you can find out what this cause is) This third cause is the most commonly missed cause of back pain and sciatica because it does not show up easily on an X-ray or MRI. Sufferers of this cause usually have pain with changing positions such as getting in and out of a car…or rolling in bed…or getting in and out of bed. Sitting or driving is usually a problem…and one leg can feel “heavier” than the other. Sufferers with this cause can even experience groin pain and trouble controlling their bladder (even at a young age).
