OBJECTIVE: LitCampers practice identifying and creating words with ending consonant digraphs. Review the Skill Remind campers that a digraph is two consonants that work together to make one new sound. Display and read fish . Say: The word fish ends with the digraph sh . The consonants s and h work together to make the /sh/ sound. Say it with me: fish. Review the digraphs and their sounds /th/ as in with ; /ck/ as in pick ; /ng/ as in song . Point out the digraph in each word, and say the two letters and their sound. Have campers repeat. Say: t and h say /th/ like at the end of with ; c and k say /k/ like at the end of pick ; n and g say /ng/ like at the end of song. Get Ready to Play MATERIALS NEEDED: BLM 1.3_Ending Digraph Word List (can be used digitally, does not need to be printed) PREP: Print and display the Ending Digraph Word List, if you choose. SET UP: Play as a whole group or divide players into groups of two or three. Review the Word List. How to Play the Game The goal of this game is to make as long a dragon tail as possible with consonant digraphs. 1. Choose a volunteer to be the dragon’s body. That player says and spells a word with a consonant digraph at the end. The player then invites another player to begin the tail by saying and spelling a new word with a consonant digraph at the end. 2. If the player spells the word correctly, the player links elbows with the dragon, then invites another player to join their tail. 3. To make the game more challenging, or to increase competition, choose two dragons. The winning team is the one that has the longest tail.
