Green Bay, WI - In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, Indian Gaming Association Chairman Ernie Stevens, Jr. presented an overview of the Tribal Government Gaming industry to students at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Stevens’s daughter, Dr. Lois Stevens, is an Assistant Professor of First Nations Studies and the First Nations Education Doctoral Program at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Stevens shared with the students the establishment and substantial growth of the Indian gaming industry. Chairman Stevens said, “Fundamentally, Native American Heritage Month provides a historical platform to share the narrative of not just our resilience but also our crucial contributions to this nation.” Stevens noted, “It is crucial to recognize that our ancestors significantly influenced the infrastructure of America’s early democracy. Countless advancements in American medicine, agriculture, and engineering would not have been feasible without the contributions of native healers, farmers, and thinkers. Furthermore, the profound impact of Native men and women warriors in safeguarding and serving our nation predates their formal recognition as United States citizens. This democracy has flourished, surpassing the national average by fivefold.” Chairman Stevens provided a vast overview of the history of Indian Gaming and added, “The influence of Indian gaming
on the American economy has been significant, offering tribes a means to achieve economic independence, fostering the creation of employment opportunities, spurring economic development, and cultivating thriving local economies. Stevens emphasized the importance of acknowledging and valuing the positive impacts of this industry on tribal nations and the broader American economy as it progresses and develops.”
