ANTI-AGING DENTISTRY NEWS UNLOCKING POTENTIAL MARCH/APRIL 2024 MY LIFE’S GUIDEPOSTS: LEARNING, FAMILY TIES, AND HELPING OTHERS
Giving back. I firmly believe the true worth of a human being does not depend on how much money they have in the bank or how many things they own. It depends on how much they help others. I spend about 10–20 hours a week mentoring smart, high-potential youths or individuals facing problems in their businesses. Many people don’t understand how much time and effort it takes to achieve success. I coach my mentees on the importance of persistence and a willingness to make sacrifices. I also ask them to actively engage with our work by completing agreed-upon tasks between each of our meetings. To understand what it takes to
Spring is a time when many of us celebrate our most cherished relationships and seize new opportunities to give back to others. As we recognize three special days in April — National Siblings Day, Volunteer Recognition Day, and Education and Sharing Day — I would like to reflect on three specific values as the foundation for my philosophy of life. Lifelong learning. We may begin our careers thinking that the more we learn, the more we will know. But I have discovered over time that the more you learn, the more you realize how much you don’t know. I consciously embrace learning as a lifelong endeavor. I am always studying up on a variety of topics and learning about new technology.
achieve success in business, one of my mentees recently interviewed each of their employees about the most difficult problems they faced. He brought the results of his survey to our next meeting, and we made plans to fix substantive problems he had identified, starting with the easiest and moving on to the most difficult. I am a true believer that the more successful I have become, the more I am obligated to help others. Achieving success will be painful, I tell my mentees. But on the other end of this road, the goals you will achieve will give you so much more freedom in life.
I also seek out people who are experts in their fields and spend time with them over lunch or dinner. I met a chiropractor the other day who introduced me to a wide range of valuable concepts, including the fundamentals of healthy sleep, correct ergonomics when seated, and the skills required to diagnose the cause of patients’ pain. I immediately asked him to dinner and spent almost two hours picking his brain about how he acquired this knowledge. I am always striving to further my own learning.
Celebrating siblings. The age gap between my oldest brother and me is a wide one — 13 years. But we spend a great deal of time together pursuing our shared passion for skiing. We began by planning annual ski trips for just the two of us, then increased the frequency to two trips a year. Recently, we’ve been spending about 10 days a year skiing together. We sometimes bring our sons along, and our wives have accompanied us, too. They enjoyed the spa while we skied. My brother is a cardiologist, so of course I pick his brain on these trips to learn about his field, from the workings of the cardiovascular system to new research on the heart. Learning from a family member is an absolute joy.
All of these practices — lifelong learning, appreciating siblings, and giving back — are foundational to my philosophy of life. I have tried to practice them consistently, and I feel fortunate to be able to share the benefits I have earned with others.

MATTRESS CLEANING 101 Better Sleep, Better Health
We spend countless hours lying on our mattresses, shaking off dander and sweating through our sheets, but we rarely give them the cleaning they deserve. No longer. This spring, give your mattress a deep and thorough cleaning by following these three steps. Your mattress will last longer, and your sleep quality will improve. Step 1: Rotate and Flip Mattresses are soft, even if they’re on the firm side, but this comes at a cost: Since we lie on them for hours, they often develop lumps. Rotating your mattress every few months is essential to stem the tide of bumps. If your mattress is two-sided, you can also flip it over. Mattresses are heavy, so don’t hesitate to get help! Step 2: Vacuum No matter the quality of your hygiene, detritus will shake off. Skin, dust, and other particulates are just part of being human. These particulates gather on mattresses, even
if you can’t see them, and can cause allergies, attract bugs, and so on. Vacuum the top and sides of your mattress, making sure to get every surface. Step 3: Check for and Remove Stains Spilled liquids can seep through blankets, sheets, and even mattress protectors. You may not notice stains until you inspect your mattress carefully. If you find stains, fret not; you can remove them with the right approach. Mix equal parts water and white vinegar for an effective, nontoxic cleaning solution. Spray the stain and work it in with a cloth or a brush, then let it sit until the stain fades or disappears. Sprinkle baking soda over the area to dry everything and vacuum the excess. Clean Regularly for Best Results A clean mattress isn’t just about looks. It improves sleep quality, as dirty mattresses allow dust, allergens, and other particles to enter air passages. Regular cleaning also
helps extend the life of your mattress, and they can get expensive. Besides cleaning, take additional precautions like using a mattress protector. With a bit of diligence, you can defend your health and your mattress.
TURN BACK THE CLOCK Widen and Brighten Your Smile With Anti-Aging Dentistry
Aging can cause changes in a person’s appearance that no amount of healthy eating or exercise can prevent.
are no longer pressed together, eliminating horizontal lines in the face, and firming up sagging jawlines.
Close gaps. Aging patients often develop dark areas between the teeth as gum tissue recedes. Years of consuming coffee, green tea, blueberries, red wine, and other foods that stain the teeth can further darken one’s smile. Using porcelain veneers to eliminate gaps between the teeth and employing tooth-whitening procedures can reverse these effects. Lengthen teeth. Years of teeth-grinding and clenching of the jaw wear the teeth down, causing the smile to collapse and lines to form around the mouth. Patients who grind their teeth, as well as those with a large overbite, can benefit from the use of veneers and crowns to lengthen the teeth and straighten them if necessary, resulting in a wider smile. This procedure also tends to straighten the jaw, creating a more youthful appearance. The results of these advances in anti-aging dentistry often rival those achieved through plastic surgery, without the incisions and long recovery time. Don’t let the passing years dim the appeal of your smile! If these procedures sound like a promising fit for you, call our office to schedule a consultation!
Innovations in anti-aging dentistry offer hope for older patients, opening new avenues to reducing facial wrinkles and restoring a brighter, more youthful smile. In addition to elevating the risk of infection and breakdown of tissues in the mouth, aging can bring structural changes in the teeth that make a person look older by reducing facial support. Procedures developed by Dr. Maddahi, a leading innovator in the field and author of a book on anti-aging dentistry, shore up aging teeth with high-quality porcelain veneers and crowns. These techniques can trim years off a person’s appearance, creating lasting changes without the incisions or injections often employed by cosmetic surgeons. Here are a few examples. Widen the arch. Older people with narrow jaws often develop lines around the mouth and may exhibit dark gaps on each side of their smile. A skilled dentist can build out the front teeth with high-quality porcelain veneers and crowns to provide better lip and cheek support and widen the smile. This entails opening up the bite so that the lips

Some states are considering banning sales to young people. People younger than 21 who consume energy drinks have more tooth decay and erosive tooth wear than those who don’t, according to a recent review of 57 peer-reviewed studies. The research also shows that consumers of energy drinks are more likely than non-users to engage in other habits that harm dental health, including eating fast foods and snack foods, smoking, and alcohol use. If you are concerned that energy drinks may have damaged your teeth, Dr. Maddahi and his team will help you take stock of your dental health and maintain your perfect smile. Global energy drink sales hit $53.1 billion in 2022 and continue to grow by about 7.1% a year. These non-alcoholic beverages contain high amounts of caffeine, sugar, and such stimulants as taurine, ginseng, and guarana. Fans like the boost in alertness the drinks provide, and many believe the vitamins and other nutrients they contain support health and boost immunity. For your dental health, however, the opposite is true. Energy drinks have a very low pH, reflecting a high acidic content that erodes tooth enamel and leaves your teeth vulnerable to harmful bacteria, decay, or root damage. This is a serious problem, because while tooth enamel can be restored to some extent by increasing its mineral content, it cannot be replaced. Energy drinks that also contain sugar compound these problems by attracting bacteria into the mouth. The sugar also breaks down into acid, further weakening teeth.
Persuading energy drink lovers to abandon them is a hard sell, however. Their caffeine content sparks increased alertness and physical energy. Stylish ads link

Exploring Sintra, Portugal

THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY IS STRAIGHT OUT OF A FAIRY TALE Add Sintra, Portugal, to Your Travel Plans!
As spring break nears, you might already have plans to travel to Punta Cana, London, Key West, Paris, or a similar destination city. One more to add to your travel checklist is Sintra, Portugal. This beautiful town rests on the hills of Serra de Sintra, just outside the capital, Lisbon. The two castles within the city are the main draws, and it’s easy to see why.
enormous gardens have many trails, marked and unmarked. You can get lost in the beautiful oasis, and we encourage you to put aside at least half a day to explore the gardens.
Quinta da Regaleira Quinta da Regaleira is the city’s second significant castle boasting
Pena Palace and Gardens The National Pena Palace and Gardens are absolutely stunning. The palace is adorned in primary colors,

The carvings include many styles, including Neo- Islamic and Neo-Renaissance. Everything is opulent, and you’ll have a great time as you take in the extravagance. Some rooms are painted as an optical illusion, with doors and hallways looking three- dimensional when they’re just flat.
another big attraction for those visiting the city, and officials try to keep people moving as they arrive, mainly as it’s one-way traffic on the steps themselves. Once on the grounds, you can explore many grottos by following their main paths. The castle itself isn’t as opulent as Pena Palace, but it’s still a lovely location to visit. Sintra is perfect for any vacation, and though these are the main draws for the city, by no means are they the only ones. We encourage you to check out this city and see if it fits your travel plans.
Once you head back outside, the rest of the grounds are just as lovely. The
