MAY 16, 1937 SAFEGUARDING THE HOMES OF TOMORROW J oshua 24:15, 24; P roverbs 22:6 Meditation on the Lesson To safeguard the homes of tomorrow, certain choices must be made today. We need have no fear of the future, if the present finds us: Choosing a Master: Accepting Christ as Lord (Josh. 24:15, 24). Choosing the Word of God: Making it central in the life (Deut. 6:6-8). Choosing Responsibility: Giving the Word to others (Gen. 18:19; Prov. 22:6). Joshua sensed the importance of choices as they affect the future. His vivid nar rative of the dealings of God with Israel he concluded with this bold imperative and personal testimony: “Choose you this day whom ye will serve; . . . as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:15). It was as though Joshua were saying: “Every house must have a mas ter. Paradoxical as it may seem, you who serve must choose who your master shall be.” The home of tomorrow is safe if Christ, by invitation, is now in the position of honor and authority. What place is to be given to the Word of God? If the home of tomorrow is to be safe, the Scriptures must be central in the life and in the family circle. We must know God’s Word so well and value it so highly that it will become a part of our natural conversation. Is it easy for you to speak of the Word of God “when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up” (Deut. 6:6-8)? It should be. The heads of the homes of tomorrow are the boys and girls of today. They must be won for Christ—individually, patiently. Abraham accepted his responsibility to his household (Gen. 18:19); have we accepted ours (Prov. 22:6)? The choice affects the course, and the course determines the fu ture. Thus you may know today what to morrow will hold. Knowing, how will you choose ? Helps for the Leader 1. W hen to B egin 1. A mother once asked a clergyman when she should begin the education of her child, which she told him was then four years old. “Madam,” was the reply, “you have lost more than three years already. From the very first smile that gleams over an in fant’s cheek, your opportunity begins.” —G. B. F. H allock . 2 . Dr. Holmes was asked when the train ing of a child should begin. ' “A hundred years before it is born,” he replied. This is a strong way of putting the truth that the training of children should begin with the training of their grandparents. — S. E . W ishard . 3. “How do you get such beautiful sheep?” was a question put to a farmer.

“I take care of the lambs,” was the reply. There is a word for pastors as well as parents in that reply .— The Presbyterian. II. S cotland ’ s L ittle C hurches Every Christian family should be a little church. In Scotland this thought blossomed out more abundantly after the bitter experi ences of the seventeenth century, during which many families were obliged to fur nish their own religious ordinances. So the Christian father became the pastor or minister. “As for me and my house, we will serve the.Lord” (Josh. 24:15).— S elected . m. T he T ime of D ecision The children of Israel were in the Prom ised Land in the lovely valley of Shechem, with the grim walls of rock rising on either side, mounts of cursing and of blessing. Which should it be? It was for them to choose. Joshua did not say, “Go home and think over this matter.” His message was this: “Choose you.” When? “This day:”' What? “Whom ye will serve.”—M. G. K. MAY 23, 1937 WHAT DID JESUS MEAN BY “TURNING THE OTHER CHEEK” ? M atthew 5 :39; 1 P eter 3 :8, 9 Meditation on the Lesson Peter’s two epistles are brimming with terse commands to the believer in Christ Jesus. In our scripture for today, his em phasis is upon the importance of the inner life. He enjoins us: “Be ye all of one mind, . . . be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for rail ing.” This is Peter’s way of saying: “Re sist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also”—truth which was uttered by the Lord Jesus Christ (Matt. 5:39). One cannot in his own strength reach this high standard of Christian attainment. It is not “natural,” having received an enemy’s blow on one cheek, to “turn to him the other also” ; it is human nature to ren der “evil for evil,” “railing for railing.” But when a new nature has been received (John 3:3), by supernatural power which is thus imparted, the new creature in Christ Jesus lives a new life. Is your life lived on the natural plane? or the supernatural? Helps for the Leader I. T he C ounterplot In the year 1818, Tomatoe, King of Huahine, one of the South Sea Islands, be came a Christian. He discovered a plot among his fellow natives to seize him and other converts to bum them to death. He organized a band to attack the plotters, captured them unawares, and then set a feast before them. This unexpected kind ness surprised and dumfounded the sav ages, who burned their idols and became Christians.— A quilla W ebb . II.
