be fervent in your love among yourselves” (1 Pet. 4:7, 8, R.V.). ■ Watching unto prayer and fervent love are closely linked. This is true, too, in the spiritual life. The man who prays only for himself will not find it easy to be in the right attitude toward God. But where the heart is filled with fervent love to others, prayer will continually rise to God for those whom we love, and even for those with whom we do not agree . . . If you wish your love to grow and increase, forget yourself, and pray, pray earnestly, for God’s children and His church. —A ndrew M urray . MAY 21 Fear Thou Not! “Fear thou not; for I am with thee” (Isa. 41:10). “Fear thou not; for I am with thee” ! Full of tenderness the voice; And the glad, divine assurance Makes my trembling heart rejoice; “As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is tried” (2 Sam. 22:31). In the Bible we have an account of three men who entered into an argument with God concerning His dealings with them. Two instances occur in the Old Testament, and one, in parabolic form, in the New. They are Job, Jonah, and the elder son in Luke 15. But in every case God had the last word. He will have the last word always. We may dispute with Him, criti cize His methods, challenge His ways, but in the end He will not only silence us, but show us that what we considered evil was only goodness in disguise, and that a gra cious purpose ran through it all. —R ussell E lliott . For no evil can befall me, And I cannot lose my way When the Lord Jehovah walketh Close beside me every day. —H elen E. J ennings . MAY 22 God’s Perfection “But when ye pray, use not vain repeti tions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking" (Matt. 6:7). Do not substitute a sermon on your knees for prayer. Do not attempt to inform the Lord what He is. Come to Him in sim plicity, and in plain, earnest language ask Him to do the work that the Spirit makes you feel needs to be done. Many words are not necessary. Borrowed beauties of expres sion are not necessary. But definiteness, and simplicity, and faith, are necessary. —B. T . R oberts . A man may offer a prayer, beautiful in diction and perfect in the number of its petitions, but if it gives him gratification afterwards, that prayer cannot have been truly prayed.—G. C ampbell M organ . MAY 24 Maintaining the “First Love” “I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love” (Rev. 2:4). There is nothing more beautiful in the MAY 23 True Prayer

"Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults” (Psa. 19:12). God will do right. Every one will say “Amen” when it comes to the punishment of sin. We should all condemn sin as God condemns it, the moment we see it. It is in ourselves, though sometimes it is hid from us. It may be some hidden sin that keeps God from using us more. Let us be honest with God, and ask Him to search us and show us ourselves. Let David’s prayer be ours: “Search me, O God”—not my neighbors, nor other people, but “Search me” !—D. L. M oody . MAY 17 Divine Intimacy "This is my beloved, and this is my friend” (Cant. 5:16). To believe in Him (our Lord Jesus Christ) is more than to believe that He is, or to believe what He says. It is to take Him and to trust Him. It is not enough to know that He is related to God; we must know also that He is related to us, and how we may become vitally related to Him.— W . G raham S croggie . MAY 18 Sacred Silence “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psa. +6:10). George Muller said that the most impor tant part of prayer was the fifteen minutes after he had said “Amen.” People do not realize how they rush into the presence of God and how they rush out again. They treat God in a way they would never treat any one of human renown. If by some chance you should be taken for an inter view with His Majesty, the King of Eng land, what would you do? Would you walk in, and as you entered, begin talking? . . . Would you go on talking thus, telling him all about his kindness in receiving you, and then thank him for the honor without giving him the opportunity of opening his mouth?— D onald G rey B arnhouse . The other day when walking along Hol- born, I looked up at the figure of Justice mounted on the top of the Old Bailey. The figure . . . is blindfolded, carrying a sword in one hand and a pair of balances in the other. I thought of the eternal justice of God. How could He be just and yet jus tify the ungodly? I looked again, and there, behind and above the figure of Jus tice, towered the dome of St. Paul’s Cathe dral, surmounted by the golden cross just catching the light of the setting sun. And I saw there God’s solution. The cross of Christ provided the holy and effective ground upon which the sinner could meet God and be at peace.— A. L indsay G legg . MAY 20 The Way to a Fervent Love “Be sober unto prayer: above all things MAY 19 Reconciled "Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other” (Psa. 85:10).
