Well, this is one shop that’s worth the trip. It’s not just any souvenir shop, inside you’ll find a museum, a two- headed calf, and a plethora of off the wall goodies to commemorate your trip. When it comes to Western souvenirs, Fort Cody Trading Post has everything from cowboy gear to plush buffaloes, jackelope statues, toy animals, and tons of clothing for all sizes and ages. The back portion of the Fort Cody building contains a small but impressive museum devoted to Buffalo Bill Cody. Its centerpiece is the spectacular Buffalo Bill’s Miniature Wild West Show, featuring over 20,000 figures, painstakingly hand carved in
wood, by Ernie and Virginia Palmquist. Many of the figures are animated — there’s a train that runs around the circus tents, and animated bucking broncos, sharpshooters, and more. Recorded audio narration tells the story of Buffalo Bill, his traveling Wild West show, and the creation of the miniatures. The show runs for about five minutes every 30 minutes. Put end-to-end, Bailey Yard’s 315 miles of track would reach from North Platte, in western Nebraska, all the way past Omaha on the Iowa border along the Missouri River. Every 24 hours, Bailey Yard handles 14,000 railroad cars. Using a mound cresting 34 feet for eastbound trains and 20.1 feet for those heading west, these two hump yards allow four cars a minute to roll gently into any of 114 “bowl” tracks where they become

2025 Fort Cody Summer Music Series
Andrew Bottrell The North Platte Telegraph
been sharing his blend of “pop/rock sensibility with country/folk” for over a decade, according to his website. The Nashville recording artist has released three albums and toured the country in that time, opening for numerous acts including The Fixx, Selah and Montgomery Gentry. June 19 will see Wyoming acoustic folk artist Quinlan Valdez come to North Platte. Valdez has been recording music and touring Wyoming and the surrounding states since 2018. Tanner Sovereign, an Elkhorn-based country singer/songwriter, will take the stage June 26. His latest single, “Heart Thief,” can be found on all major streaming platforms. Janelle Irwin, a country rock artist from Haigler, will perform July 3. Blues/ American artists Doug Rees and Ken Keller will perform July 10, and singer/ songwriter Mike Brown will perform July 17. Performing as Alli and I, Andrew Standley will take the stage on July 24. Standley and his guitar, Alli, have been performing and recording music since 2007. His blend of punk, emo, Americana and folk can be heard on his 2015 full-length album “Imaginary
Hearts.” Southern soul singer J Edwards will perform July 31. To wrap up the 2025 Fort Cody Music Series, Wyoming singer/songwriter Mason McTell will take the stage Aug. 7. McTell’s full-length album “Drunks and Thieves” is streaming on all major platforms. Martinson noted that while many of the artists are familiar faces to the Fort Cody stage, Mason McTell, J Edwards, Tanner Sovereign are performing for the first time. To buy season passes online, go to the NRoute Entertainment Facebook page. Season passes are $25 with individual concerts $5. “When we started the series in 2011, the focus was making it family friendly and affordable, because we wanted it to be a place where people who are in North Platte traveling through on vacation could come and listen to music,” Martinson said. At the time, he said most concert venues in North Platte were at over-21 bars and lounges. Founding a music series at Fort Cody Trading Post allowed him to create a family-friendly atmosphere for all ages, and at a low price.
From the second Thursday in June to the first Thursday in August,, you can hear soulful roots, rock and folk music at Fort Cody Trading Post during NRoute Entertainment’s annual Summer Music Series. The 15th edition of the Fort Cody Music Series features “something different every week and a little bit of something for everybody.” organizer Rob Martinson said. Local openers take the stage at 6 p.m. each Thursday, followed by the headline act. Martinson noted that headliners are off stage by 9 p.m. “We’ve got a great stage, a great sound system — it fills the stockade back there and bounces off the Hampton (Inn),” Martinson said. This year’s offerings range from Americana to acoustic folk, country, Southern soul, blues and singer/ songwriter. Fort Cody Summer Music Series staple Daniel Christian kicks off this year’s concerts, bringing his Americana stylings to North Platte on June 12. A Tecumseh native, Christian has

Looking for something exciting that the whole family can do together this summer? With stock cars, mini-sprints, demolition derbies and other fast-paced fun, the Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte delivers a full season of thrills for all ages. On Saturday nights from April through September, the dirt track comes alive with the sound of revving engines as dedicated drivers vie for titles and bragging rights. Located on the Lincoln County Fairgrounds, the Lincoln County Raceway is conveniently accessible from Highway 30, with ample free parking available. The grandstand accommodates covered seating for up to 2,500 guests and a press box for announcers, in addition to concession stands, food trucks and restroom facilities. Defined by open-wheel vehicles designed to run on short ovals, circular dirt or paved tracks, sprint cars can reach speeds upwards of 100 miles per hour — a perfect fit for the semi-banked 3/8-mile Lincoln County Raceway grounds. Die-hard racing enthusiasts and first-time attendees alike will love the adrenaline rush of the high speed and stiff competition. Just be forewarned — because sprint cars typically don’t have mufflers, they can be loud. Bringing along some form of hearing protection is always a good idea. Saturdays throughout May, June and July highlight late model High Plains Dirt cars, the Great Plains International Motor Contest Association tour and the Sandhills Shootout Summer Nationals in various divisions. July 28 marks a rare weekday event with the Monday Night Madness Nutrien Ag Solutions Fair Race at the conclusion of the annual Lincoln County Fair. Two more dates follow in August to showcase late-model High Plains Dirt cars, Dirt Crown Hobby Stocks and IMCA Championship race events. The second annual Metal Mayhem Demolition Derby wraps up the season on Saturday, Sept. 13. BST Promotions and BST Racing oversee management of the Lincoln County Speedway, along with tracks at the El Paso County Raceway, Phillips County Raceway, Cortez Fairground Speedway, Lakeview Motorsports Park and Mosca Motorsports Park, all in Colorado. Unless otherwise specified, adult tickets for Lincoln County Speedway racing events are $20 each; seniors 65 and up and active military (with ID) are $15; teenagers
