Student Rights and Responsibilities
• Elementary knowledge of their computer operating system • Basic knowledge of: Word processor, sending and receiving emails with attachments, using an internet browser and search engine Hardware Requirements • Internet access with a high-speed broadband connection • Students must be able to video conference in real-time • Google Chrome internet browser Students must also complete the online new student course PCT 101 – Passport to Canvas prior to starting classes. This course is an introduction to Canvas that includes exercises and tutorials to assure student success. The IT Department is responsible for issuing student laptops prior to classes starting. The college provides technical support for all active students Monday through Thursday outside of class times. Support is provided during these days from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Appoint- ments are recommended to assure the department can address the needs of the student in a timely manner. Material Circumstance that May Adversely Impact an Applicant’s Ability to Complete a Distance Education Program The Practical Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs are delivered in a blended format that includes both distance education courses and residential courses that are taught on-campus in the state that Sumner College is physically located. Students must be able to attend courses at the physical location to progress through the program. Students should research whether the programs offered at Sumner College meet their state’s profession requirements. A student’s physical location is determined at the time of application based on information provided by the student. Accommodation Request Policy 1. Statement of Non-Discrimination and Accommodation Sumner College (“the college”) does not discriminate based on disability. Individuals with disabilities are entitled to a reasonable accommodation to ensure that they have full and equal access to the educational resources of the college, consistent with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (29 U.S.C. § 794) (“Section 504”) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (42 U.S.C. § 12182) (“ADA”) and their related statutes and regulations. Section 504 prohibits discrim- ination based on disability in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. The ADA prohibits institutions from discrimi- nating based on disability. to ensure all students receive beneficial, high-quality clinical education during their time at the college. All students must be prepared and willing to commit themselves to any travel time required to achieve the program’s educational goals. Travel to a clinical site varies and can be located up to 5 hours one way from the campus. Students are encouraged to review the student handbook and enrollment paperwork for more information. Rotation requirements will be presented to the students by the Clinical Coor- dinator. Sumner College does not provide transportation for students to and from clinical sites. Students should plan accordingly for these travel costs and a mode of transportation. Carpooling with other students is encouraged, and clinical assignments cannot and will not be based on transportation needs. Online Student Rights & Responsibilities A student taking an online class or classes from Sumner College • Demonstrate the technical and academic skills to be a successful online student; able to operate a computer and conduct internet functions necessary to complete an online class, and have the management skills to work independently. • Have ready access to a computer and the internet and a backup plan if hardware or internet access fails. • Use software that complies with the minimum requirements of software necessary to access and run the course. • Download provided ebooks and related course programs. • Log in and participate in an online class on a regular basis in a meaningful way. • Know and comply with due date and deadline requirements of the course. should consider these rights and responsibilities. Students taking an online class or classes must: • Communicate with the instructor and fellow students in a professional, polite manner, using appropriate tone, language, grammar, and spelling. • Know and understand student rights and responsibilities as detailed by the class syllabus and student handbook. • Demonstrate commitment to academic honesty by completing assignments and other coursework with integrity. • Monitor and ask questions about his/her course grade. • Save backup copies of assignments and class emails. Technology Resources and Requirements for Distance Education Courses Students must meet the minimum student skills, hardware, and software requirements for the distance education courses (online) taught at the college. All programs offered at the college include distance education courses. A computer is issued to every student enrolled in the following programs: Practical Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing Students are expected to have at least the following skills before
