¡d e a d e r ¡R e a c t io n Best Seller In your August issue was a most in teresting article, “ From Eye Gate to Heart Gate.” I am deeply interested and would be grateful for some Best Seller posters in English and Japanese. I can use both effectively in my part of Osaka. I do a great deal of English Bible class work as well as other work in Japanese churches and I am sure the posters will lead some to the services. I pray for God’s further blessing in this fine work for the salvation of souls all over the world in these very serious and uncertain times. V erna S. H ertzler Nichome, Kujo, Nishi-ku. Osaka, Japan Dr. Bauman’s Articles I would not have missed these articles for anything. It is hard to understand why all who profess to love the Lord are not interested in prophecy and why they are not looking and expecting Him to come. What you wrote regarding the one thousand year day and sabbath were re vealing. I hope you will decide to put your series in book form. M rs . H attie C. H olmes Umatilla, Florida Mrs. Nicholson’s Poem I can truly say I read all of your mag azine; it is certainly full of spiritual food which strengthens God’s people. The poem in the September number by Mrs. Nicholson I would like to frame and give to friends. May you be blessed in your work. M ary E. P erron Washington, D. C, Biola Family Circle I want to tell you how much the King’s Business means to a Biola graduate out here, so far from home. I especially enjoy the Biola Family Circle, and turn to it eagerly each month for news of class mates in other parts of the Lord’s vineyard. I do wish, however, that there could be a column of news of current happenings, particularly about the fac ulty, as they meant so much to us during our time there.” F rances J ackson Comitan, Chiapas, Mexico Question Box I am a comparatively new reader of your magazine and like it very much. written by John Calvin back in the 16th century, the December issue lists the various relies which were found in Roman Catholic cemeteries in 60 different cities. For instance, Calvin found 6 heads o f John the Baptist, 6 right index fingers of the Apostle John, 5 heads, 3 arms and 2 bodies o f St. Anne, and many bodies o f the Apostles. Other relics include 6 nap kins that supposedly covered the head o f Christ, 4 spear points that pierced His side, 14 nails which were used on the cross, etc., etc. Calvin also states that what was be lieved to be the brain o f St. Peter was venerated in Geneva, and the bodies of both Peter and Paul were actually divided in the basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul in Rome, with the head o f Peter being sent to the church o f St. John Lateran. A foot o f St. Peter was preserved in Paris, his jawbone at Poitiers and neck bones of Peter at Trier, Germany. St. Peter’s Cathe dral at Nantes, France, is said to possess a fingernail o f the Apostle. The present-day claim is that the bones o f St. Peter have been undis turbed under the great Cathedral in Rome since the time o f Constantine. What rank nonsense! How can an en lightened civilization stand such an insult to intelligence? Yet the Roman Catholic authorities think nothing o f this. In fact, they quite allow such terrible falsification to go merrily on. The Catholic Encyclopedia comments: “ Supposing it to be in fact spurious no dishonor is done to God by the continuance o f an error which has been handed down in perfect good faith for many centuries . . . Hence there is justification for the practice o f the Holy See in allowing the cult o f certain ancient relics to continue.” It is a relief to turn from such utter folly to the sane, sensible, and heart-satisfying words o f the great Apostle Peter as preserved for us by inspiration o f the Holy Spirit o f God. Read what Peter says in his first let ter, chapter 2, verses 9 to 11. Note also his setting forth o f Christ as the living stone in chapter 2, verses 4 to 8. The question isn’t Peter’s bones, but Peter’s words. May God help us to be intelligent followers of our wonderful Lord and intelligent readers o f His blessed Word! Whither Russia? W ILL the Soviet empire come to an end? What is to be its des tiny? These are questions which to day are revolving in thè minds o f many o f the world’s thinkers. The fast, sprawling Soviet coalition o f na tions seems to be riding to a terrify- T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S

world into a third World War. For a few years, at least, we are to be spared the unspeakable horrors o f an atomic attack. But the question i s : Will those mil lions o f Americans who have been bombarding God’s throne with peti tions fo r victory and peace now re member to thank Him for the answer ? Or will American know-all, military strategy, arms, and armies receive the credit? There is not the slightest doubt in the world but that America has known blessing far greater than -any other nation in history. Because of this blessing poured out, there should be a consequent stream o f praise ascend ing to America’s God thanking Him for His mercies. This gratitude should be expressed by old and young, rich and poor, high and low, educated and uneducated. With such offerings of praise God is well pleased. Roman Relics T HE newsy and factual magazine Converted Catholic, formerly edi ted by the late Dr. Leo H. Lehman, ought to be on every Protestant preacher’s desk. Without rancor and without apology, this publication dis closes the “ inside” doings o f the Roman Catholic Church. Great pub licity has been given to the supposed excavation in Rome o f the bones o f the Apostle Peter. Just why they re mained undiscovered until this late date no one seems to understand. What is the great significance of these bones to today’s world is also hard to figure out. Nevertheless the Roman Catholic propaganda machine has deemed this the opportune moment to spring this supposed surprise. In an interesting article in the aforementioned magazine, a former Roman Catholic priest, Peter J. Does- wyk, writes o f the Roman Catholic love o f relics. Quoting from a book

Where Are America’s Nine? f ■ 'H E LORD had healed ten lepers JL o f their loathsome malady. Prob ably the healing occurred in one of the smaller villages o f Galilee. At any rate, our Lord was on His way down toward Jerusalem. Just why the ten lepers had congregated there, or what was their background we do not know. The point o f the story is preserved for all time in the Lord’s cryptic remark when only one o f those who were healed returned to give Him thanks: “Were there not ten cleansed, but where are the nine?” What is emphasized, of course, is our Lord’s awareness o f the failure o f these lepers to grant Him the or dinary courtesy o f expressing grati tude. It may be a new thought to some, but it is none the less true, that God carefully notes human expressions of praise and thanksgiving. God’s mer cies are constant. They are “ new every morning, and fresh every eve ning.” Also they are widespread. His bountiful rain falls upon the just and the unjust. His life-giving sunshine bathes all countries. The grass grows; the flowers bloom; the birds sing. For all o f this God looks fo r acknowledg ment. It is tragic to have to remark that in the vast majority o f cases God is disappointed. But there are special providences o f God. There are times when God spe cifically answers our prayer. There are occasions where God’s arm moves in our behalf simply because we have requested it. Take, for example, the apparent turn o f the tide in our favor in Korea. There is no doubt but that a great wave o f intercession has been ascending to the throne o f grace, peti tioning God for a righteous peace and victory. Now as we go to press, apparently victory is to be the prize o f the United Nations. Evidently Russia will not seize this opportunity to plunge the Page Four

Most Boring T IME reports that Editor Board- man o f Columbia University polled several hundred U. S. librari ans, editors, authors, reviewers, and school teachers, asking them to send a list o f ten classics that have bored people most. The results included Bun" yan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, Melville’s Moby Dick, Milton’s Paradise Lost, Spenser’s Faeria Queene, Boswell’s L ife o f Samuel Johnson, Scott’s I van- hoe, and Goethe’s Faust. All in all, Boardman’s readers listed 427 books, including the Old Testament. It is not suprising that many people are bored by attempting to read the Old Testa ment, or the New Testament either. The Scriptures themselves emphati cally declare that the man outside of God cannot receive nor discern the truth of God. More than that, the reading o f His Word, which is both living and powerful, makes the un saved reader extremely uncomfort able. On the other hand, the Scrip tures become the most thrilling and precious piece o f literature in all the world to those who intimately know the Author. Nail Polish T HE Gallup Polls continue to col lect information on the American way o f life. Recently, in a national survey, there were twice as many men who said they disliked fingernail pol ish as there were who liked it. A breakdown o f this poll indicates young men somewhat in favor, mid dlemen divided and older men dead set against it. Gallup reports the black, blue, vermilion, green and ruby-red fingernail polish may be making a hit with the women, but with the males they are strictly “ the bunk.” No Shortages T HE U. S. o f America is better supplied with food than ever be fore in history, according to the Bu reau o f Labor Statistics. In our na tional larder are: 450 million bushels o f wheat; 176 million pounds o f but ter; 69 million pounds o f cheese; 340 million pounds o f dried milk; 103 mil lion pounds o f dried eggs. Concerning sugar which was restricted during the last war, we have now on hand more than 1% million tons with another million tons easily obtainable from Cuba. On our farm lands is no meat shortage, with farmers fattening 37% more cattle than a year ago. Short ages seem to be out o f the picture at this time, but above and beyond that let us not forget the source from which these blessings have come, even the strong and powerful hand of a God who has mightily blessed America.

Let America beware, too. We praise God for the fact that our land has multitudes o f open churches and open Bibles. We take comfort in the fact that our forefathers directed that “ in God we trust” should be placed upon our money. We are grateful that lit erally tens o f thousands o f mission aries go from our shores to the ends of the earth carrying' the good news o f God and His dear Son, but there are other elements in our land o f which we are not proud. Let us cry out to God that He spare America and that He continue His loving favor upon our land. Praise Be to God! I T IS rightly said that honest con fession is good for the soul. Let it be added as well that honest confes sion is also good for our nation. Since the inception of the Korean incident and the consequent revelations of America’s unpreparedness and ineffi ciency, there has appeared a series o f very enlightening articles in the public press. Their content has also been broadcast by radio. These arti cles have dealt with the unparalleled truth that the American soldier is not always a superior soldier; that Amer ican weapons are by no means the best in the world ; that American lead ership has had its full share o f blun ders ; and that American victories have sometimes resulted from overwhelm ing superiority of men and munitions rather than by courage-inspired lead ership or military prowess. These facts, while unpleasant to admit, are good for us. Too long has the rank and file American thought lessly boasted o f his superiority. Too long the fable o f American invincibil ity has been promulgated. The real truth is that America is quite vulner able and, like other lands, could easily taste the dregs o f defeat. On the other hand, our beloved land could be made invincible. Our armies could always experience victory. Our cause could always triumph, were we to remember that to God belongeth the battle. With God on our side, or as Lincoln would have put it, “With America on God’s side,” we would never need to know defeat. Let America look heavenward and with sincere heart give genuine grati tude to God. Let praise be given to God the giver o f all good gifts ! 0 that our President would lead us in this! O that Congress would pass a resolu tion honoring God! Surely messen gers o f the Lord will lead the wor shipers in a service o f heartfelt gratitude at this Thanksgiving time.

ing crest. The latest addition, o f course, is China’s half billion. India’s millions seem to be leaning toward Communism; Indo-China and Indo nesia, even Japan, are infiltrated with preachers o f the Communistic ide ology. What is to be the eventual outcome o f this great coalition o f nations ? Prophecy in the Bible is really pre written history and therein God has set down the minutest detail regard ing Russia’s end. No other nation’s destruction has been so gravely out lined as that which is called Magog and which Bible students interpret as present-day Russia. This is because never in the world’s history has there been such a blatant atheistic and ar rogantly blasphemous nation as the Soviet Union. Other nations have been idolatrous. Some have idols o f wood and stone; others have bowed down to the sun, moon and stars. But Rus sia’s attitude has been to defy God and to crowd Him out o f His uni verse. It has not been a case o f one God against another. The official Soviet attitude is that God is non existent ; man is the lord o f life. It is not hard to understand how such views demand punishment from a righteous God. The Lord has vividly described the end o f such blasphemy. Briefly, the story is this: Russia will continue to expand, like a great cancerous growth upon the earth’s surface. Somewhere near the middle o f the tribulation period, Russia will suddenly decide that she must have the chemical and mineral wealth o f the newly-estab lished nation o f Israel on the south. With huge armies she will swoop down to seize upon the land o f Pales tine. The details are given in Ezekiel 38 and 39. The other nations o f the world will protest vigorously, only on paper. The Jewish people will get set to vainly resist, but when things look absolutely hopeless, God Himself will turn the artillery o f heaven against this invading army and even the ele ments will battle the Russian hordes, as earthquakes o f unprecedented fury will shpke the military machines. Rain and hailstones will beat the armies into subjection. Lightning will destroy whole regiments. When the smoke o f battle has cleared away, five-sixths o f the army will be lifeless bodies. Nor is that all, for the same atmos pheric ammunition will be directed against the homeland bringing un speakable devastation. Such will be the end o f Russian arrogancy. This is the final chapter o f a nation that defied God. This is God’s reply to those who boast that He doesn’t exist.

ful groves. A recent newspaper article stated that, through experimental farm ing, oranges weighing a pound each have been produced in this fruitful land. This has been made possible by the minerals of the Dead Sea, which are used to enrich the soil—and there is enough to fertilize the whole of Pal estine. It is this vast wealth that will bring Russia from the north “ to take a spoil.” (Read Ezek. 38:10-12). Where will Armageddon be fought, and what armies will be the contest ants? Armageddon is a large plain of tri angular shape a few miles from Jerusa lem; about fourteen miles on the north, bounded by the hills of Galilee; about eighteen or twenty miles to the east, bounded by the hills below Nazareth; and about twenty miles on the southwest, bounded by the highlands of Samaria. Here is a vast plain, in a hilly country, very suitable for the maneuvering of large armies. Many a battle has been fought upon this plain. It is called in the Old Testament the valley of Me- giddo, the plain of Jezreel, and the plain of Esdraelon. While many battles have already been fought upon that plain, yet in Revelation we read of the greatest battle of all, yet in the future. It will end with the most decisive victory of all history. The Antichrist, the king of the north (Russia), and the sunrising kings will meet on this battlefield. In Rev. 19:19 we have Armageddon described: “And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.” The battle will be over in a moment; for the Lord will slay His enemies by the “ sharp sword” that shall proceed out of His mouth. (See Rev. 19:15). The victory will accomplish the deliverance of God’s earthly people, the believing remnant of the Jews. Referring to Revelation 3:5, someone asks: “How can a name be blotted out of the book of life if it is not first en tered therein?” It is only by inference that the fall ing away doctrine can be built upon this quotation from the Scriptures. On the other hand these words mean just what they say, and give us the blessed assur ance that God will not blot our names out of the book of life if we are trust ing in the finished work of the Christ. Moreover, “ no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation” (2 Pet. 1:20); and if specific passages are con sidered in their relation to the whole body of truth as set forth in the Word of God, no contradictions will be found. When Christ promised : “My sheep. . . shall never perish,” He meant exactly what He said. T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S

is a mark of sonship: “ And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father” (Gal. 4:6). Christ and His apostles plainly taught that baptism with water is an ordinance to be obeyed as an outward testimony of an inward change of heart, but they did not teach that one must be baptized in order to be saved. Is it right for a Christian family to send their boys to a military academy? Military academies for boys do not specialize in the science of war, in spite of the association connected with the name. They offer the curriculum found in any school, together with rigid train ing in discipline. Whether such a school has an advantage over other schools de pends largely upon who is guiding its policies. Why will the nations fight for the possession of Palestine? I have heard it described as nothing but a waste, and of no value commercially, or otherwise. The question you ask would have been difficult to answer some twenty years ago, but not so today. Palestine is any thing but a “waste, of no value com mercially.” In fact, it is acknowledged to be the richest land in the world. The Dead Sea is a vast chemical reservoir. Its riches alone are greater than the combined wealth of all the nations, to say nothing of other portions of this land of promise. Dr. Thomas A. Norton, of New York City, editor of Chemicals, gives the following estimate of the wealth of the Dead Sea: Mineral Tons Vaine Potash ................. 1,300,000,000 $ 70,000,000,000 Bromine .............. 853,000,000 260,000,000.000 Salt ....................li;900,000,000 27.500.000,000 Gypsum .............. 81,000,000 120,000,000 Calc. 1 am convinced that baptism is for saved people according to Ephesians 2:8,9, yet I am frequently confronted with the question of baptism as made in Mark 16:16. Does John 3:5 refer to the natural birth or to the physical birth? Please give me a clear answer that I may pass it on to these ques tioners. Mark 16:16 does not say, “He that is not baptized shall be damned” ; but only “He that believeth not.” John 3:5, says: “ Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” This verse has no reference to baptism. It does refer, as in other passages of Scripture, to “ the washing of water by the word” of God. The Lord Jesus said to His disciples, “ Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you” (John 15:3); and again He prayed, saying, “ Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17). Paul, writing to the Ephesians, said that “ Christ . . . loved the church and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the wash ing of water by the word” (Eph. 5:25, 26). And to Titus he said plainly: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regen eration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5). Peter, likewise, wrote, saying that we are “born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorrup tible, by the word of God which liveth and abideth forever” (1 Pet. 1:23). This is the meaning of John 3:5, as many other Scriptures prove. The sin ner is born again through the quicken ing, cleansing power of the Holy Spirit as He applies the living Word of God to the unregenerate heart. These are God’s only two agencies in regenerating the sinful soul—the Spirit of God and the Word of God. Then the ordinance of baptism follows in obedience to our Lord’s command, and as a testimony to the world of new life in Christ Jesus. Moreover, Acts 10:43, 44, 47 state that Cornelius and his household received the Holy Spirit before they were bap tized. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit Page Six

Biblical Ignorance What do college students know about the basic principles o f the Chris tian religion? To answer this, Prof. R. Frederick West o f the Texas Chris tian Union questioned 2,000 students in both church and non-church col leges. He reported that most o f these x were pitifully ignorant. In a typical group o f 83 in a non-church college, all but three had a religious back ground. Only 4 o f 83 could list all Ten Commandments; 70 could not name the four gospels, 74 could not describe what Jesus stressed as the two greatest commandments. Professor West concludes that while the average college student knows lit tle about spiritual things, he does have a thirst for righteousness. When he has a chance to read the Bible under Christian guidance, he is fascinated by it. One ray of hope in this dark picture is the constant growth of such college organizations as the Inter- Varsity Christian Fellowship. In Ten Years—26,000 & In a recent report published by The Living Church, an unofficial Episcopal Church Weekly, it is stated that a total o f 26,242 adult Roman Catholics have been received into that church in the United States during the past ten years. The compilers o f this report state that these statistics are conserv ative. They did not include Roman Catholic children, or adults taken into the Episcopal church by the rite of confirmation. They estimate that the inclusion o f such persons would more than double the total. This is one an swer to Roman Catholic propaganda which constantly endeavors to prove an exodus from the Protestant Church to the Roman Catholic fold. Signs in the Skies A report from London describes a strange blue sun followed by a freak blue moon in the skies over Western Europe. While astronomers debated on the cause o f this phenomena, some Danish old folks descended upon the banks, demanding their deposits for fear o f a possible Dooms’ Day. Others laid the cause to the filtering effect o f a far-flung smoke from vast forest fires or a peculiar high cloud forma tion. Bible students are aware that one o f the signs o f the last days is stellar wonders. Violent Earthquakes Recently one o f the most devastat ing earthquakes in all recorded his tory occurred in Northeast India and neighboring lands. The reports tell o f vanishing mountains, o f rivers dried

cient Holy Land, according to the Scriptures! Dogma Proclaimed Shortly the Pope will proclaim the doctrine o f the Assumption o f the Virgin Mary as a Catholic Church dogma. This means that no Catholic may disagree with the teaching that the Virgin Mary was taken bodily into heaven at her death without go ing through death. Actually the proc lamation o f this dogma has been un der consideration since 1946, when the Pope sent a circular letter to his bish ops asking their advice. The letter was overwhelmingly in favor o f such a proclamation. For enlightened Scrip- turally-minded Protestants, such dog ma seems both childish and sinful—• childish, because very little is gained by such ado; and sinful, because it is another barrier between the heart o f the Roman Catholic church member and the Person o f Christ. Lessening Virtue •** A sort o f a Kinsey Report from overseas states that more than 80% o f all French and Belgian women con sider virginity unimportant. Answers to a series o f questionnaires sent out by Belgian psychologist, Dr. Marc Lanval, to 600 women, revealed that 82.6% think it is all right for girls to have premarital experiences. Other startling percentages o f immoral views on life were disclosed. Along with this, nearly 60% o f all o f the women ques-' tioned considered religion superfluous. When reading such figures, one is reminded o f the judgment o f God de scribed in the first chapter o f Romans because o f the breakdown in the moral character o f the women o f the ancient world. Surely this is one o f the signs o f the times.

up and turned off their course; o f gaping fissures, uprooted forests and new lakes. It is reliably estimated that millions o f people have been affected by the quakes and the flood which fol lowed. At this date only scattered in formation is available. Earthquakes and their increasing intensity consti tute another sign of the near approach o f the end o f the age. Lots of Blood In a recent report, three Univer sity o f Chicago doctors published their estimates as to the amount o f blood that would be needed for trans fusion purposes in the event o f an atomic attack on a large city. If two atomic bombs were dropped on a city the size o f Chicago, 500,000 would be injured. Of these, each victim would need a pint o f blood every other day fo r a month, totalling 7,500,000 pints. This figure was about half as much as was collected in the entire United States throughout World War II. Where to find the facilities to keep the blood refrigerated and how to ap ply it in due time were problems not discussed. Disputed Land Occupied An Israeli army spokesman report ed that his country had taken control o f certain disputed territory along the Jordan River at the north boundary between the Hoshemite kingdom and Jordan and what was formerly Pal estine. The Jews have begun to plow up land in that area. Arabian coun tries claim that the Israeli army has invaded the land, but Israel contends that this territory was granted to Israel under the terms o f the Arabian- Jewish Armistice. It is to be expected that by one means or another the Israeli government will come into full possession o f the borders o f the an

THE IMPENDINGWORLD STATE? Sixth in a Series o f Prophetic Messages

By Dr. Louis S. Bauman, of Washington, D. C.

F | > HE first recorded command God ever gave to man after his creation, was to “ Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it” (Gen. 1 :28 ). This could hardly be interpreted as an order for the build ing up of a collectivist society. Bather, it called for a scat tering abroad of the human race over the face o f the whole earth. It was Cain who “ went out from the presence o f the Lord . . . and builded a city” (Gen. 4 :1 6 ,1 7 )— the first city—and, from that day to this, the city has been the rendezvous o f those who amass themselves to walk “ in the way of Cain” (Jude 11). It can be taken for granted that the “ giants in the earth” in the days of Noah— the “mighty men which were of old, men o f renown” (Gen. 6 :4 ) who led men in their rebellion against God, filling this earth with wickedness until it “ repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth”—were congregated in great cities. When God in desperation washed from the earth the great wickedness of these “ men of renown,” He again commanded the eight righteous souls who came out o f the ark, to “ Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth” (Gen. 9 :1 ). Again, instead o f scattering themselves abroad upon the earth, the human race soon “ found a plain in the land o f Shinar; and they dwelt there . . . and they said, Go'to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face o f the whole earth” (Gen. 11:2-4). “ And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children o f men builded. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one . . . Go to, let- us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not under stand one another’s speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face o f all the earth: and they left off to build the city” (Gen. 11 :6 -8 ); “ and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth” (Gen. 11:9 ). It seems quite evident that the Lord was not pleased with the city-building plans o f man kind, the collectivistic, communistic societies o f the early dwellers o f earth. When Abraham and Lot decided to separate, Abraham gave Lot his choice as to his dwelling place. Lot looked down on the cities o f Sodom and Gomorrah and made his fatal decision. He “ lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain o f Jordan,” and was fascinated with the glory o f the great cities o f Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham and his household moved out upon the hills and into the valleys o f Canaan, and there cared for his flocks, while, “ Lot dwelled in the cities o f the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom” (Gen. 13:10-13). The rest o f the sad story: is it not told in the Book? Thus it went through the centuries. The children of Israel brought down upon their heads the wrath o f Phar aoh because they would not amalgamate with Pharaoh’s world-state. Nebuchadnezzar formed his world-empire,

massed his mighty military and civic forces inside the four vast walls o f Babylon, and sought to unify all the religious forces o f the empire in the worship o f himself. Cyrus, Alexander and Caesar all built in succession their great world-empires. All o f them passed into the mists o f oblivion. Other overlords tried to build their world-states, notably Attila, Charlemagne, Napoleon, and Hitler. All sank in seas o f blood and remain only as detested mem ories. And now, once again at the nightfall of our age, men are in a desperate search for an abiding peace, and are looking toward some fabulous concourse of nations to coax the elusive dove o f peace to build her nest in our midst, and abide upon the earth. Men never seem to learn the lessons o f history. In every case, the attempts o f men have failed because o f a departure from the living God. Paul was right: “ Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way o f peace have they not known” (Rom. 3:15-17). Why? The answer is: “ There is no fear o f God before their eyes” (Rom. 3 :18 ). “ Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation . . . the harvest shall be a heap in the day o f grief and o f desperate sorrows” (Isa. 17:10,11 ). In June 1945, the representatives of fifty-one sovereign nations met in San Francisco, California, and formulated the “ Charter o f The United Nations,” and on the 26th o f that month this charter was formally signed by these rep resentatives. The closing paragraph o f the preamble o f this “ Charter” reads as follows: “ Accordingly, our respective Governments, through rep resentatives assembled in the city o f San Francisco, who have exhibited their full powers found to be in good and due form, have agreed to the present charter o f the United Nations, and do hereby establish an international organi zation to be known as The United Nations.” This is the world’s first attempt to establish an “ inter national organization” with the power o f a world-govern ment since Caesar ruled the earth. And, divine revelation plainly reveals that it will be the last. The revelations o f the Almighty God to His prophets, especially Daniel and John, cannot be misunderstood. Something is going to cause “ ten kings” whose political habitation will be within the confines o f what was once the “ fourth Kingdom” (Dan. 7 :23 ), to “ have one mind, and . . . give their power and strength unto the beast . . . For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their king dom unto the beast, until the words o f God shall be ful filled” (Rev. 17 :1 3 ,17). And that which even now is caus ing the nations o f Western Europe to release their sov ereign power into the hands o f one man, “ beast” that he will be, will be none other than the emergence o f Gog, the great Russian bear, “ out o f the uttermost parts o f the north” (Ezek. 38:15, R .V .). The “ ten kings” [king doms] will crush the great northern bear, for such is the revelation in Ezekiel 38 and 39. Then, when none other can make war with him (Rev. 13:4) the Antichrist, Satan’s

man, “ the prince o f this world” (John 14:30) who, com ing, will have “ nothing” for Christ, shall be given “ his authority” (Rev. 13 :4 ), and the last world-government will come. But, when it comes, the saints o f God will have been “ caught up” (1 Thess. 4 :17 ) away from the troubles and sorrows of earth. The reign o f Satan will be but “ for a little moment” (Isa. 26:20) during which time the judg ment o f the nations will take place. Then will come the dawn! “ And the kingdom and dominion, and the great ness o f the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints o f the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. Hitherto is the end of the mat ter” (Dan. 7 :27 ,28 ). And so, once again at the close of the age, the gravest danger we face, the most significant trend o f the hour, is the one-world-government movement. Scores o f organized movements are striving day and night to bring in a world government. Men and women o f great wealth and power are dreaming o f world govern ment by night, and working fo r it by day. Millions o f dol lars are being contributed to the cause o f world govern ment. In a recent book on the subject, by Joseph P. Kemp, he says: “ The Representatives o f the people will not find it easy to rely upon their own good judgment on this issue. The ■propaganda fo r World Government has became so power ful that on April 24, 1949, the New York Times declared: ‘The subject has now become so highly emotionalized that a public statement that could be interpreted as in the slightest unsympathetic, brings blows that bow the sturd iest head.’ ” The World Government movement gets the vote of the vast proletarian masses o f the world’s greatest democra cies by promising them practically everything—housing, insurance, hospitalization, education, pensions— under the guise o f social welfare. Any thinking man should know that if such a centralization o f human control should come into the grasp o f one man, or a small coterie o f men, the price every man would have to pay is the coin o f indi vidual freedom. Our own “ land o f the free” will become but a province, a subdivision, subject to the will o f a vast pagan world. More than that, it will signal the drop o f the curtain upon all human government —“ weighed . . . and found wanting” (Dan. 5 :27 ). One o f the saddest facts of the hour is that many churches are yielding themselves to this trend, and pro pose for religion what the rulers o f this world propose for the political world. Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick has adopted a slogan that has attracted wide attention and approval: “ One World Or None!” Does anyone delude himself into believing that a “ World Council o f Churches,” such as Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam proposes for the relig ious forces o f the world, would keep itself separated from the world-government that is the goal o f the one-worlders ? History had but one story to tell: every political “ beast” o f the ages past, has regimented the religious world when once he has regimented the political world. It is simply inevitable. More than that, it is the testimony o f the “ sure word o f prophecy” that it will be even so. The hour is coming when once again one man shall rule the world— economi cally, educationally, politically, and religiously. Is it not written: “ And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book o f life o f the Lamb slain from

President Truman giving address at site of United Nations Building the foundation o f the world. If any man have an ear, let him hear” (Rev. 13:7-9). Is it possible that any thinking man cannot see that the whole trend of the world today is a pell-mell rush to the fulfillment o f the prophecies of Daniel and John? No man is so blind as the man who can not see that Satan is now making his bid to bring the world under the control o f the one man who will fall down and worship him. That worship o f Satan that the Lord refused on the mountain-top (Luke 4 :5 ), the devil now offers to another. We do not question the sincerity of purpose on the part o f the men who seek the elimination of the curse o f war by the creation of a system o f world-government. Albert Einstein would assure us that “ There is only one pathway to peace and security: the path o f supra-national organi zation.” Churchill is firm in his opinion that if Europe is to survive— if civilization itself is to survive—-“ it must unite.” Well-meaning men are they, but they know not that they are but chasing a will-o’-the-wisp! Until they give the Prince of Peace His seat at the head o f the Coun cil tables, their search for peace will continue to be in vain. So the story o f the great civilizations o f the past cer tainly gives us no assurance that the centralization o f gov ernment into the hands of a few men will prove to be the panacea for the ills o f mankind. Rather, it will bring to an end all that our American fathers cherished—yea, it will bring on the reign o f the world’s last Satanically in spired ruler—and then only one more great event: the arrival from Heaven (Rev. 19) o f the One to reign “ whose right it is” ! (Ezek. 21:27). Surely, surely, the bell tolls the hour! “ He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus” ! (Rev. 22:20).

What leverage, then, you have in lifting these weights! One o f the best books dealing with the subject o f nervous tensions, con tains this statement: “ Honesty, in tegrity, calling a spade a spade, brings inner calm and peace.” Not one o f us would gainsay the truth o f this. But David tells us plainly in Psalm 51:6 that “ thou [God] desirest truth in the inward parts.” This same writer, for whose good advice we are thankful, declares with regard to the need for feeling secure: “ Everyone needs friends. People need your friendship. Security lies in your friendships. You make friends by being friendly.” We may corroborate this with Proverbs 18:24: “ A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly.” Here is another quotation: “ Mere awareness o f neurotic trends is not enough. You must do something about it. Have your neurotic trends com pelled you to do certain things? Now do exactly the opposite.” Again we read in James 1:22, “ But be ye doers o f the word, and not hearers only.” So many have to confess sadly, as did Paul in Romans 7 :19 : “ The good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.” But as Paul did not remain in this valley o f despair neither do we need to for in Romans 8:1, we read, “ . . . no condemnation . . . walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” There is the crux o f the whole thing. All the verbal advice and all the written words o f man somehow leave us without the power to follow the pre scription. God gives us the formula: “ Walk in the Spirit.” This is reiterated throughout the Word o f God. Our Heavenly Father is so very practical. We are not left con fused and bewildered if we will to obey. For instance, just one command to believers, if followed through the power o f the Holy Spirit, would give us healthy minds, calm nerves and stable emotions. It is the verse, Philippians 4:6, “ Be careful for nothing,” or as another translation renders it, “ Be not over-anxious about anything.” We will not break down if we walk with Him! M ANY truly born-again children o f God are suffering from nervous disorders in these days o f “ strenuous living.” If you belong in this number, you may have placed yourself under the care o f a competent, well-trained phy sician or psychiatrist. Or you may be attempting to follow the precepts laid down for you in one o f the many splendid books or short magazine articles, dealing with n e r v o u s tensions, phobias and so forth. We are in no way belittling these trained workers or disparaging these authoritative writers. In fact, we thank God for the help they are giv ing countless persons. However, if you are wondering whether or not the advice you are receiving is sound, why not re-read your Bible with the Page Ten____________________________________________

object o f finding out what God has to say about our minds, nerves and emotions ? Surely God who created us as triune beings, and gave such explicit directions for the care o f our bodies and spirits has not forgotten to lay down rules for our souls! It may surprise you to learn that just as the laws o f our land are based upon God’s laws, the Ten Com mandments, so the best thinking o f the most informed and best qualified psychiatrists reflects (consciously or unconsciously) God’s viewpoint on problems o f the present day. Suppose the diagnostician puts his finger right on your sore point and tells you to do thus and so. I f you discover a parallel in God’s Word where you are not only told what you must do, but shown how it can be done, you have gained all the more.

Jet Black. Looking around cautiously, he made a quick grab for the meat and swallowed it hurriedly. But he was too late; one o f the pigeons had seen him! Immediately this pigeon informed the others that this strange bird in their midst ate spoiled meat, hence he could not be a pigeon. Again they drove off poor Jet Black. That night, sitting alone in the tree, Jet Black made a- resolution that he would never again eat spoiled meat, or touch anything bad, as long as he was among the pigeons. He would only do it in secret. The third morning found Jet Black once again disguised with white ashes, feeding among the pigeons. He was going to be very careful how he walked and what he ate. He was hav ing a real feast o f grain. “ How much easier this is than trying to find food in the hot and barren fields o f famine- stricken India!” he said to himself as he filled his stomach. Then something happened. Just as Jet Black was congratulating himself on his good fortune, lo and behold his brother, Gray Bill, came and sat on a branch o f that very tree under which Jet Black was feeding. Gray Bill watched the pigeons for a while and then his attention was drawn to the strange-looking bird eating with them. “ That fellow looks like my brother, Jet Black, but his feathers seem to have turned gray,” thought Gray Bill. “ He walks like the pigeons, but he is my size. It must be my brother. I will call him and see what happens.” (Continued on Page SU)

I ET BLACK was born and reared in a wee nest in a famine area of the great land o f India. His poor mother had to work hard to pro vide sufficient food for him and his brother. When he was still very young, his mother taught him to forage for his own food. At first it was a lot of fun, like playing “ hide and seek,” but as he grew older, he found providing his own daily food a difficult task. One day, sitting in a tree near a mission bungalow, Jet Black saw a man come out, take up a handful of grain, and throw it on the ground for the pigeons. At once an idea came into the little crow’s head. “ If only I could be a pigeon, then I would not have to work so hard to obtain my food,” he thought. “ So what can I do to make myself look like a pigeon?” Suddenly Jet Black was flying as fast as he could toward the city gar bage dump. He came right down upon a pile o f white ashes. Ttolling himself in the ashes and flapping his wings violently, he soon covered himself from head to foot. His black feathers were a whitish gray. Then he flew back to the tree where the pigeons were feeding. Very slowly and care fully he settled down on the ground and began to eat greedily. “ Oh, this is wonderful to have my food brought right to me!” he exclaimed, as he jumped excitedly from one grain of wheat to the other. The pigeons were surprised to see him, but he was white and, while he did not look exactly like them, they concluded he must at least be re lated to them, and so they allowed him to feed. But when he began to hop around, they began to wonder, for a pigeon always takes mincing little steps when it walks. They said one to another, “ Let us watch his walk. We can soon tell from that whether he is one o f us or not.” Just then Jet Black took a little jump toward another grain o f wheat. Immediately all the pigeons began to shout, “ This bird does not belong to us! He is a foreigner and a th ie f!” So with one accord they drove Jet Black away, pecking his now bedrag gled feathers with their beaks. Poor Jet Black! He sat in the tree

wondering what he should do next. How nice it had been to get his food so easily! He could not let an oppor tunity like that slip by! He finally decided to spend all night practicing how to walk like a pigeon. It was very hard for Jet Black to take those little steps, but he kept it up faithfully until dawn. When the urge to jump gripped him, he checked himself. The next morning, bright and early, Jet Black flew back to the pile of ashes, covered himself with another coat o f white and returned to the pigeons. As soon as the missionary tossed the grain to the pigeons, Jet Black again cautiously made his way into their midst. The pigeons observed that he was a stranger, but did not recognize him. Everything went well and Jet Black was enjoying a good breakfast until suddenly the smell of something he liked a lot came to him. He took little pigeon steps to the side o f the tree from which the odor pro ceeded. Sure enough, there was a piece o f delicious spoiled meat! “ Oh, i f only I can eat this without the pigeons seeing me!” exclaimed
