What leverage, then, you have in lifting these weights! One o f the best books dealing with the subject o f nervous tensions, con tains this statement: “ Honesty, in tegrity, calling a spade a spade, brings inner calm and peace.” Not one o f us would gainsay the truth o f this. But David tells us plainly in Psalm 51:6 that “ thou [God] desirest truth in the inward parts.” This same writer, for whose good advice we are thankful, declares with regard to the need for feeling secure: “ Everyone needs friends. People need your friendship. Security lies in your friendships. You make friends by being friendly.” We may corroborate this with Proverbs 18:24: “ A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly.” Here is another quotation: “ Mere awareness o f neurotic trends is not enough. You must do something about it. Have your neurotic trends com pelled you to do certain things? Now do exactly the opposite.” Again we read in James 1:22, “ But be ye doers o f the word, and not hearers only.” So many have to confess sadly, as did Paul in Romans 7 :19 : “ The good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.” But as Paul did not remain in this valley o f despair neither do we need to for in Romans 8:1, we read, “ . . . no condemnation . . . walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” There is the crux o f the whole thing. All the verbal advice and all the written words o f man somehow leave us without the power to follow the pre scription. God gives us the formula: “ Walk in the Spirit.” This is reiterated throughout the Word o f God. Our Heavenly Father is so very practical. We are not left con fused and bewildered if we will to obey. For instance, just one command to believers, if followed through the power o f the Holy Spirit, would give us healthy minds, calm nerves and stable emotions. It is the verse, Philippians 4:6, “ Be careful for nothing,” or as another translation renders it, “ Be not over-anxious about anything.” We will not break down if we walk with Him! M ANY truly born-again children o f God are suffering from nervous disorders in these days o f “ strenuous living.” If you belong in this number, you may have placed yourself under the care o f a competent, well-trained phy sician or psychiatrist. Or you may be attempting to follow the precepts laid down for you in one o f the many splendid books or short magazine articles, dealing with n e r v o u s tensions, phobias and so forth. We are in no way belittling these trained workers or disparaging these authoritative writers. In fact, we thank God for the help they are giv ing countless persons. However, if you are wondering whether or not the advice you are receiving is sound, why not re-read your Bible with the Page Ten____________________________________________

object o f finding out what God has to say about our minds, nerves and emotions ? Surely God who created us as triune beings, and gave such explicit directions for the care o f our bodies and spirits has not forgotten to lay down rules for our souls! It may surprise you to learn that just as the laws o f our land are based upon God’s laws, the Ten Com mandments, so the best thinking o f the most informed and best qualified psychiatrists reflects (consciously or unconsciously) God’s viewpoint on problems o f the present day. Suppose the diagnostician puts his finger right on your sore point and tells you to do thus and so. I f you discover a parallel in God’s Word where you are not only told what you must do, but shown how it can be done, you have gained all the more.
