position. It is well that he should re member that he is engaged in a spiritual race. There are some things absolutely essential to a successful running of that race. How well has the race been run during the year that is past? What are our plans for the running of the race during the year that lies ahead? May the study of this lesson today provide us with a good running start for the year 1951! Bearing' Fruit John 15:1-5 The teacher should keep in mind that the main idea in this passage is that of fruit-bearing. The Lord is talking to His disciples on the way to the Garden of Gethsemane. The matter of salvation is not under discussion. Rather the Lord indicates what He expects of those who are His own, namely, “fruit” (v. 2), “more fruit” (v. 2), “much fruit” (v. 5). The basis for fruit-bearing is set forth in verses 1 and 5. The Lord Himself is the vine but in this mystical vine every believer is a branch. It is like the rela tionship in the mystical body of Christ. Christ is the head of that body but every believer is a member of the body (1 Cor. 12:27). Because Christ is the life-giving vine, it is to be expected that believers who are the branches will per form their God-given function and bear fruit. The Father’s care of the vine is sug gested in verses 2 and 3. All this care is to the end that the branches may bear fruit. In some cases there are branches which He “ taketh away” or “ lifteth out,” as Canon Howitt was fond of rendering it (2a). When a believer persistently refuses to do God’s will and bears no fruit, there are times when God removes them from His service. He sometimes even takes them home to Heaven through death as was the case with certain ones in the Corinthian church (1 Cor. 11:30). May this not also have been the case with Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11)? In all instances, there is the pruning and fumigating that is neces sary in order to more fruitage in the life. We all need that at times. What is the nature of the fruit the Denever should bear? Study Galatians 5 :22 for the fruit of Christian character and Romans 1:13 for the fruit of Chris tian service. The indispensable require ment for fruit-bearing is stated in v. 4. Running the Race j Phil. 3:8-16 The rich teaching of these verses may be summed up in the similitude of a race. The successful runner in the Grec ian games must keep his eyes on the goal ahead of him. A runner might lose the race by just one glimpse backward. Paul thinks of the spiritual race in which every believer is engaged. To win in this race the believer must keep his eyes fixed upon Jesus (Heb. 12:2). As he keeps looking to Jesus he is not unmind ful of the fact that at the end of the race when Jesus comes there will be a N O V E M B E R , 1 9 5 0

“ prize” that will infinitely outweigh any sacrifice that its attainment demanded. The prize here is not the “high calling” itself. Paul was sure of that. All believ ers will have part in the rapture (1 Cor. 15:23). But not all will receive “the prize” in the sense that their works will not be deemed worthy of reward. Such as these will doubtless have reason to “ be ashamed before him at his com ing” (1 John 2:28). Helps for the Children The Christian Way Gal. 2:20; Phil. 3:8, 12-16 Memory Verse: “Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path, be cause of mine enemies” (Psa. 27:11). Each Christian boy and girl is saying one of two things about every part of his life. Either he is saying, “ For to me to live is Christ,” or he is saying what those in Luke 9:59-61 said, “ Lord, I will follow thee . . . but let me first . . .” Some are saying, “ Lord, I will follow Thee, but my friends . . . I must go where they go and do those things that they do or I won’t be popular.” Some say, “ Lord I will follow Thee, but this habit . . . I have a sinful secret habit that I enjoy, and I refuse to give it up for Thee.” Others say, “ Lord, I will follow Thee, but don’t ask for any money or don’t take any of my time for Thy service—I must have it all for myself.” Again, some say, “ Lord, I will follow Thee, but don’t disturb my plan for my life work. If I yield that plan to Thee, perhaps I may have to be a preacher, or a preacher’s wife, or a mis sionary, and I would rather be some thing that would give me fame, or bring wealth and popularity to me.” Paul said, “ I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.” In one of our great cities there is a vault with seven locks. Seven men own keys to these locks. Unless all seven men place their keys into the locks and turn them, the safe cannot be opened. Five or six keys are not sufficient, all seven must be used. So it is with your house of life. Unless the Lord Jesus Christ has the key to every room, He cannot use you for His glory and your life cannot be lovely for Him. Does He have the key to your friendships, your money, your habits, your time, and the plan for your life?
