Dec. 3, 1950 L ig h t in g L ives Objects: A flashlight with the bulb taken out. Lesson: Why is it that this bulb does not give light? “ Because it is not a flashlight,” you shy. This bulb is foolish, because it thinks it can give light by itself. I can hear it saying, “ Well, I was made to give light, and if I try hard enough, I am sure that I shall be able to shine.”

strengthen the Christians there. “ For the work of Christ he was nigh unto death” (Philippians 2:30). He was will ing to let Christ shine through his life that he might be a help to others. He was an abiding Christian. We must never be like this foolish bulb. We must abide in Christ and let our lights and lives shine for Him. Objects: A thermometer; a bottle of mercurochrome; a bottle of aspirin; a small bottle filled with water (tinted with food coloring) and marked “ Reme dy” ; a teaspoon. Lesson: Will you pretend with me, for a little while this morning, boys and girls? Let’s pretend I’m sick. I really feel fine this morning, but for our les son we will imagine that I have a very bad stomach-ache. I have taken my tem perature, you see (hold up thermome ter), and it is quite a little above nor mal, which means that there' must be something wrong inside of me. My head throbs too, which is often an indication that something is wrong. I brought several interesting things with me this morning which might be able to help my condition. Here is a bottle of mercurochrome. Isn’t it pretty? It smells very antiseptical, too. Because my head and stomach ache, I think I will put a little on my head, and see if it will help. Oh! but you mustn’t laugh. I have to do something to correct my condition. Here is some aspirin. I could take one of these and cover up my supposed pain. It would make me forget it for a while. But you know, boys and girls, the con dition would still be there, and the pain would return once the aspirin ceased to take effect. Here is a small bottle marked “ Rem edy.” We will let it stand for what a doctor would prescribe for my case. I’ll take a big spoonful of this. Don’t you worry, boys and girls. It’s just some water I tinted—the best-tasting medi cine you ever saw. T H E K I N G ' S B D S RN E S S Dec. 10, 1950 T h e C ure F or t h e C ase

We would have little sympathy for such a foolish bulb, were it not for the fact that Christians are very often just as foolish. They forget the words of Christ when He said: “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me . . . for without me ye can do nothing.” Many people are trying to serve Christ and shine for Him without abiding in Him. Try as it may, the bulb cannot shine by itself. I put it under my coat in the dark, but it does not drive the darkness away. It is just as dark as the darkness itself. You have told me that the reason for the bulb’s not shining is that it is not connected with the flashlight. That is true. Let us place it in the flashlight and see what happens. It shines and gives forth light. As I now place it under my coat, it drives the darkness away. It is just this way in the lives of Christians. If they try to shine apart from Christ, they will be cold and dark, and will not be able to do anything for Christ. If they abide in Him, His life will shine out through their lives to other lives, causing them to glorify God. We should light the lives of those around us. Epaphroditus is a fine example of a Christian who lighted the lives of those around him. In Philippians we find the account of a trip he took to Philippi, even though in ill health, that he might
