Apprenticeship spotlight shines on FMB members

Mrs Thompson and her fellow teachers at Whitehirst Primary School happily welcomed local builders to speak to pupils about working in the building industry. Their enthusiasm was rewarding. If only this was the case across all schools! We’d like to extend a big thank you to everyone at Thistle Trade Group Ltd and Martin & Son for supporting us on the day. If any other members would like to share their views and experiences in a video interview, please contact Gordon on the details below.

During Scottish Apprenticeship Week, hosted between 6 and 10 March, FMB Scotland Director Gordon Nelson and FMB member company Thistle Trade Group produced a video interview discussing members’ enthusiasm and support for apprentices. Small and medium-sized (SME) construction firms train the vast majority (more than 75%) of construction apprentices. And FMB members throughout Scotland are passionate about employing and training apprentices. The aim of the video was to highlight members’ support for apprenticeships, and to bring this to the attention of Scottish policymakers and Skills Development Scotland. Stuart Tolmie from the CITB filmed Gordon chatting with Thistle’s carpentry and joinery apprentice Liam O’Donnell about the wide range of building projects Liam has worked on at Thistle. Liam’s boss, Sean, generously took time away from his busy schedule to talk about why his company continues to recruit and train apprentices. Watch the interview on our YouTube Channel: tinyurl.com/FMB-YouTube An interactive discussion Gordon also accompanied Martin Sneddon and his team at Martin & Son Builders, based in Kilwinning, to Whitehirst Primary School in North Ayrshire to attend an interactive presentation to pupils. Martin’s son encouraged pupils to have a go at pointing, while Martin explained how he uses the 50-plus tools he brought along.
