THE KING’ S ' BUSINESS The meaning o f “moth” and “rust” cam safety. The term “naked” is to be under- be understood . properly . only when we stood as describing one who had cast off remember that in oriental times wealth con- his outer garment only, and was clothed sisted o f fine linen garments, and that in with the under garments. Compare Isaiah the absence of.banks, gold was buried for 20:2-4; John 13:4; 21:7.

A Christian Workers’ Library

"C'ROM time to time requests have been made regárding a small library which the average Christian layman can use effect ively in his study o f the Bible. The fol lowing books are named as being such that we can recommend. They aré not “ too scholarly to be useful.” Some books cán- not be used by the layman because their 'contents are not presented in such form as he can grasp. ' 1. A good well-bound Bible, either Authorized or Revised. Every real student o f the Word o f God ought to possess a copy o f the American Revised Version. While some would maintain that there are glaring mistranslations in this version, yet on the other hand, many, many passages are more clearly understood than in the Authorized Version. On the whole, we feel that the American Revision is superior to the Authorized Version, although we are aware that it has not yet, and may not ever, supplant the King James Version. What is known as the “ Two-Version Bible” is. much used by prominent Bible teachers. Do not buy a cheap Bible; if never pays. Buy. one that is well-bound and that can bé marked. A man who does not mark his Bible has lost half o f the joy o f Bible study. A good Bible ought to cost at least -$5.00. 2. A good concordance. Cruden’s is. of course, the simplest and least expensive. Strong’s and Young’s,- howeyer, are supe rior, and one or the other ought to be pos sessed by the man who wants to be a real student o f the Scripture. Cruden’s can be bought for $1.00; Strong’s for $3.00; Young’s for $5.00. 3. Bagster’s Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. This book sells for about

$1.50. It is a compendium o f Scripture texts, and is the best book in existence to aid one in comparing scripture with scrip ture. Mr. Moody is quoted as saying that if he-'had his Bible, Cruden’s Concordance and Bagster’s Treasury of Scripture Know ledge, he would be well fitted for finding out the will o f God. 4. Topical text books. Many o f these may be mentioned: “ Bible Text Encyclo pedia” by Inglis; a n d “ Topical Text Book”, which has an introduction by Dr. R. A. Torrey. The former costs about $1.50;: the latter about 25c. 5. - A good biblical geography. Hurl- but’s Biblical Geography and. Bible Atlas is about as good as one can get. Its price is $2.00. 6. A book dealing with the manners and customs o f the oriental peoples, especially with those o f Bible lands.. Bissel’s Biblical Antiquities (Price about $1.50) and Ori entalism (Price about 75c), published. I think, by the Tract Society, are not only inexpensive, but also standard among the smaller works. 7. Biblical history. One should become acquainted with the history o f the Bible. Probably MacLear’s Old and New Testa ment History is about as good as one can get. Price $2.50, for the two volumes. 8. A good Bible dictionary. For a small volume, Davis’s Bible Dictionary, Revised (Price $2.50) ig* the best. For a larger (5 vols.) work, probably the best and most conservative is that published by the How- ard-Severance Company, Chicago, entitled "The International Standard Bible Ency clopedia,” o f which the late Dr. Orr was editor-in-chief. The price o f this is about $25.00, and it is sold only by subscription.
