9. A good commentary. - The field of commentaries is so large and there are so many varieties to select from, that one scarcely knows what to recommend. Mat­ thew Henry’s Commentary is,, from the devotional point o f view, standard. The Expositor's Bible, as a whole, is a splendid work. For a small grammatical and crit­ ical commentary, Jameson, Fausset & Brown holds its place. O f course, it must be remembered that we are recommending books now for the layman and for the preacher who may not have had the advan­ -Theme: The High-Priestly Prayer of Our Lord. T e x t : John 17:1-26. Introduction. The important place that prayer, partic­ ularly intercessory prayer, occupied in the life o f our Lord. I. O ur L ord ' s P rayer for H imself , 17:1-5. For His glorification by 1. Enduring the Cross (1, “the hour” ). 2. Blessing humanity (2, “give eternal life” ). 3. Perfect obedience (3-5, “ finished the work” ). II. O ur L ord ' s P rayer for H is D is ­ ciples , 17:6-19. 1. Their relation to the Father and the Son described (6-8). TOPIC: Christ Suffering for Us. After all the passages in the Bible treat­ ing on this subject have been looked up and a general knowledge on the subject obtained, it will be found that there are more passages than can be used in one Bible reading. Sift- them; choose the best. The following may be the result: I.. 1 Peter 3 :18—To bring us unto God. A new access. II, 1 Peter 2 :24—Our death unto sin and unto life. A new death.

A new spirit. IV. Galatians 3:13—That we might receive the promise o f thè Spirit through faith. A hew spirit. V. 1 Peter 2 :21—That He might leave us an- example. A new example. VI. Titus 2:14—That He might redeem us jj from all iniquity. A new redemption.
