Dear Conference Attendees:

Welcome to the Brain Injury Association of Michigan’s 36th Annual Conference , held in conjunction with the Michigan Brain Injury Provider Council. The Conference Planning Committee has been hard at work over the past year to ensure the success of this educational program, which continues to be the largest conference of its kind in the nation. The next two days will feature experts in brain injury rehabilitation from across the state, as well as guest speakers from all corners of the country. We are certain that you will enjoy their presentations, and please give them a warm welcome. The exhibit hall, like last year, is filled with many who have attended past conferences. We also extend a warm welcome to several newcomers who we hope will give us a chance to get to know about their areas of interest, adding to the experience and enhancing our understanding of brain injury. Please take the time to visit the exhibitors in the exhibit hall; we know you will enjoy talking with them about the products and services they offer. Also, please let them know how much you appreciate their support of the Brain Injury Association and our members. Our featured keynote speakers this year include Dr. Bennet Omalu and Mr. Rye Barcott. Dr. Omalu is the first doctor to discover and identify Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) as a major factor in the premature deaths of several professional athletes. Many of you are familiar with his story as it was the subject of the book and film Concussion . We are excited to hear him discuss his revolutionary findings in the fields of neuroscience, sports medicine and safety, and brain trauma. Dr. Omalu will be speaking on Thursday morning. On Friday, please join us as Rye Barcott delivers his keynote speech. Mr. Barcott is former U.S. Marine and social entrepreneur. He co-founded Carolnia For Kibera, a non-governmental organization dedicated to break the cycles of violence and poverty through participatory development. Barcott is also the author of the best- selling book It Happened on the Way to War . His story will remind all of us that small groups of people from all walks of life can come together and make a difference. Your commitment to supporting the mission of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan is demonstrated by your attendance and participation at this year’s Conference. We thank you for your dedication to this important work, which directly affects the lives of vulnerable people in our great state. On behalf of brain injury survivors, their families, the Brain Injury Association of Michigan board of directors and staff, as well as the Michigan Brain Injury Provider Council, thank you and, once again, welcome to the 36th Annual Fall Conference.
