The Shabbat morning service is constructed like the daily morning service with two preparatory sections: the opening ‘Morning Blessings’, of a personal nature, are followed by the ‘Verses of Song’, that prepare the community for the formal, ‘statutory’, part of the service that follows. Introduced by the bar’chu , the ‘call to prayer’, the Sh’ma with its blessings opens this section, followed by the Amidah , the central ‘standing’prayer. Special to Shabbat, and at the heart of the service, is the Torah reading with its accompanying prophetic text, the Haftarah . Following the various prayers on behalf of the Jewish people and the community, some congregations include a Musaf , ‘Additional’, Amidah in line with the temple practice of offering an additional sacrifice on Shabbat and Festivals. The concluding prayers and songs prepare us for our return to the outer world.
