The poet celebrates the rituals of Shabbat, blessings over wine and bread, the wearing of special clothes. But, as befits a table hymn, he dwells at length on the food and drink, the special meat, fish and desserts to be relished on this day!

c ¨A ªk §n d¤f mrei This day is honoured ... The initial letters of the verses spell the name Yisrael, and those in the final verse spell ‘ha–ger’ , the proselyte, but precisely who this might be is not known.
