3 Rouse yourself, for every night your soul goes to heaven to account for its actions before the Maker of evening and morning. 4 The One who is faithful to the task will return her to you if God so wills. No one died through God’s error –

and there was evening and there was morning.

5 Gladden the afflicted one, the only one, perfect and pure. If we do not keep our soul alive,

how will we be worthy of the light of morning?

that are not worn on Shabbat. It celebrates the rabbinic idea that at night the soul returns to God and it is restored to us in its glory as we awake. It is our task to preserve the soul within us, the source of light.

l ¥`¨l d ¤cF` I shall give thanks to God ... This mediaeval poem is recited by some in the morning and as a table hymn on Shabbat. According to custom we have omitted the fourth verse that refers to tefillin,
