This traditional Torah Service symbolically re–enacts the events at Mount Sinai when Moses went up the mountain and brought the Torah down to earth, to read it to the assembled people. The passages that are included emphasise the Sovereignty of God. The service is built around two Biblical verses that are set apart from the surrounding ones in the Book of Numbers (10:35–36). The first sentence is effectively a battle–cry that signalled the start of the next stage of the journey of the Israelite encampment through the wilderness – scattering God’s enemies before them. The second sentence signalled the next halt and resting place. The Psalm that traditionally accompanies the procession on Shabbat, Psalm 29, also emphasises God’s power in the world, like a massive storm sweeping through the land. Other themes are the restoration of Zion and the re–building of Jerusalem.
