The prayers of our lips and the meditation of our heart replace the sacrifices of old.

On Shabbat and festivals an additional ( musaf ) sacrifice was made in the temple, and when the temple was destroyed and the Amidah was instituted, an additional recitation was arranged to coincide with the sacrifice. Some, but not all of the early Reformers, with their rejection of the sacrificial cult and dislike of what they considered to be unnecessary repetitions, omitted the Musaf service. In making it an option for this prayer book we have changed the desire for the restoration of the temple cult of the central blessing, emphasising instead how prayer has replaced animal sacrifice and expressing the universal hope that all people can meet in prayer in a restored Jerusalem. We provide a short version of the Musaf Amidah for those who wish to retain a symbolic reminiscence of it, and a full version. If the latter is used, the earlier part of the service will need to be shortened.
