Meditation before putting on the Tefillin:

Meditation before putting on the Tefillin:

i ¦p §p ¦d I now prepare myself to lay Tefillin to fulfil the command of my Creator who commanded us to lay Tefillin, as it is written in the Torah: ‘Hold fast to them as a sign upon your hand and let them be as reminders before your eyes.’ And in them are these four sections of the Torah: ‘Hear O Israel ...’ 1 ; ‘This will happen ...’ 2 ; ‘Sanctify ...’ 3 ; ‘And when the Eternal shall bring you .. . ’ 4 . They state the uniqueness and unity of God, whose name be blessed. They also record the signs and the wonders that God did for us when bringing us out from Egypt – God, whose power and authority extend over the highest and the lowest, to dealing with them according to the divine plan. God commanded us to lay Tefillin on the hand as a reminder of God’s ‘outstretched arm’, and opposite the heart to show in this way that the longings and desires of our heart should be controlled for the service of God, whose name be blessed. And on the head over the brain, showing that the mind that is in my brain, with all my senses and faculties, should be committed to the service of God, whose name be blessed. By keeping the commandment of Tefillin may fulfilment in my life increase, together with holiness and holy thought, undisturbed by sin and wrong. Do not let the desire for evil deceive us nor provoke us. Let us be led to serve the Eternal as it is in our hearts to do. Amen.
