what happens now?

Preparing for the placement Health and safety

During the placement The placement student will primarily be an employee of your organisation and will be expected to adhere to your company terms and conditions and code of conduct. The Employability Team and a placement contact tutor will provide support to both you and the student during the placement. The student’s progress will be monitored throughout the placement year. We endeavour to visit all our UK host companies during the placement. The placement contact tutor will ask to meet with the student and his or her supervisor. We will ask you to provide feedback on this occasion, as well as directly to the student during and at the end of the placement. During the placement students will need time off to attend a University call back day and in some cases students may have to resit exams.

Before our students can embark on their placement we need to ensure that they will be working in a safe environment. For this reason all placements must be approved by NTU on an annual basis and we will check that you have the required Health and safety provision in place. Health and safety arrangements require no additional provisions to those already being made for regular employees in compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Student supervision Please allocate a line manager or supervisor who the student can turn to for help and support. Just as you would with any new member of staff, students should be provided with a workplace induction and introduced to the appropriate personnel at the start of the placement.

support from NTU during the placement year

During the placement, you and the student will have the support of the Employability Team and University tutors. We monitor the student’s progress at three key points during the placement. The student will receive a call from the University shortly after they start to ensure they have settled in. An academic tutor will endeavour to visit you, at a convenient point during the placement (UK placements only). The main purpose of the visit is to establish that the placement is progressing satisfactorily. The tutor will usually spend time with the student and supervisor, looking at their work and their wider working environment. This usually last two hours. Progress will also be monitored at appropriate intervals during the placement through telephone contacts and web / video conferencing where available. There will be a call back day at the University for students during their placement. These contacts provide an opportunity for all parties to raise any issues or concerns which they might have. In the unlikely event that a serious problem arises, or if for any reason an earlier or additional visit is needed, this can be arranged via the University’s Employability team or placement contact tutor.

Assessment Placement students work towards an additional qualification: a Placement Diploma. To achieve this award, they are required to undertake a minimum of 36 weeks on placement in total. Students are required to complete a development portfolio and placement log against four learning objectives for their placement. Students are required on their return to the final year to undertake a business research project relevant to their degree. They are not expected to undertake any primary research during their placement year but may use the experience to form ideas. They may also request to return to their organisation in their final year to gather information for this project.

Intellectual property Work performed by students on placement may give rise to intellectual property. Ownership of any intellectual property rights created will be determined by the employment contract, and would normally be expected to reside with the employer unless a specific agreement exists.
