What are you seeing in the public sector? There is a huge amount for local authorities to juggle at the moment, with devolution and Local Government Review (LGR) on the horizon, budget cuts, sustainability targets to meet, a new Procurement Act recently come into force and the pressure to protect leisure as a non-statutory service. We know public sector leisure generates huge social value, improves public health and addresses inequalities in participation. A new report from Sport England – The Social Value of Sport and Physical Activity in England – found the total estimated social value generated by
community sport and physical activity in England to be £107.2bn in 2022–23. But how do local authorities protect this while still balancing the books and avoiding Section 114 notices? This is the challenging and complex backdrop against which we are all operating at the moment. Among all of this, however, the three key themes from conversations we’ve been having recently would probably be devolution, co-location of health and wellbeing with active leisure, and regeneration.
