OPERATOR PERSPECTIVE
lockers & cubicles

We must do better at raising the profile of our centres, talking about them with pride. I don’t hear us doing that enough as a sector.

Group Company
I also believe the community hub model helps. With the libraries and GP surgeries and so on, Places Leisure creates places people naturally come to. We give those who don’t believe exercise is for them other reasons to step over our threshold. And then they realise it isn’t as scary as they thought. They see others who look like them. They feel the sense of community and they realise these are places for everybody. As a sector, we must also recognise that we aren’t really competing with each other. Yes, we’re all facing cost pressures and we’ll have to get smarter in how we deliver,
but we all offer something slightly different and there are more than enough people to go around. So there could and should be much more collaboration and it’s incumbent on us as operators to make this happen, providing the evidence, telling the stories, engaging with decision makers. My end-of-first-year summary is this: the sector has some great people, but we need to do more to change the narrative and shine a light on what we do – and if we’re all independently knocking on doors, it’s unlikely we’ll be heard.
