Set against this dynamic backdrop, growth across the three largest franchise brands – Anytime Fitness, énergie Fitness and Snap Fitness – seems modest. Between them, these three brands now operate 329 clubs – a slight increase from 324 last year. Although 19 clubs were added in the 12 months to 31 March 2025, closures at Anytime Fitness (-13) and énergie Fitness (-1) offset some of that growth.
10% of respondents offer NHS services on-site, reinforcing the huge opportunity for the private sector to get involved in the healthcare agenda
Finally, new audit questions for this year shine a spotlight on important and emerging trends in the private sector. These questions were generally answered by 37–55% of our database, offering an incomplete but nonetheless valid snapshot of an evolving product offering. Over half of our database responded to our questions about padel and tennis provision, yet only 2% of them currently offer padel courts compared to the 11% with tennis courts. Ground space is of course an issue here, but it will be interesting to see if padel’s momentum continues and translates into a higher percentage of clubs with courts next year. Meanwhile, 38% of respondents answered our question about reformer pilates, with 11% of them saying they have reformer studios. Given the apparent omnipresence of reformer pilates right now, this might seem on the low side – until you consider the proportion of total private sector clubs accounted for by the low-cost brands, where a premium offering such as reformer pilates might not be an easy sell. (That said, operators need look no further than GymNation in the UAE and Saudi Arabia for inspiration on exactly how this can be done.) Interestingly, 38% of respondents also answered our question about offering NHS services in the club: GP referral, cancer rehab, MSK programmes and so on. Of these, 10% said they offer such services on-site – almost as many as said they offer reformer pilates. This reinforces the huge opportunity for the private sector to get involved in the healthcare agenda, as outlined by Nuffield Health’s Dr Davina Deniszczyc in her fascinating interview on page 50. Again, 38% responded to our question about dedicated rehab and recovery zones – 13% of these said their clubs have a dedicated provision – and 37% about therapy rooms, with almost half of these (48%) saying they have them in the club. In the large majority of cases it is just one room, but a small handful of respondents report having 10+ therapy rooms. Finally, 38% of our respondents talked to us about retail, F&B and vending, with 56%, 50% and 43% of these respondents, respectively, saying this was on offer in their clubs.
