Everything we do is done with data, says the founder of HVLP operator NRG Gyms, as he outlines plans to scale his community-focused brand

What’s the latest from NRG Gyms? Having identified an opportunity, we have trialled our focused, data-driven model over a number of years. We wanted to ensure our product was fully designed around our members before rolling out. Over this time, we have proved that the model can work, driving strong returns and double-digit year-on-year growth across our key metrics. On the back of this, we have recently completed a £4m capital raise and brought in a great central team to support the next phase of growth, allowing the current offering of seven sites to be scaled across the UK to in excess of 50 sites – and potentially more through M&A activity.

Our data and analytics work tells us we have a runway of in excess of 300 sites in the UK. This, coupled with an increasingly fitness-centred population, means there is an opportunity for all of us in this space. What’s driving this performance? Since I opened my first club in Gravesend in 2013, I have sought to refine and develop the HVLP (high-value low- price) model. I started that site on a £70,000 shoestring but continually reinvested as capital came in, learning and responding to member feedback. I would like to think we’re now at HVLP 3.0! In fact, members have shaped every aspect of NRG gyms, from colour scheme and lighting to products and services.
