It’s a positive circle where people are using smartwatches, which encourage them to keep healthy, which means they keep going to the gym. The wider ecosystem is doing really well and it’s having a hugely positive effect on humanity. The challenge and opportunity for the gym sector now is to keep pace with this changing consumer dynamic, including through enhanced use of tech and data. I won’t share exactly what NRG is doing here, but as a sector we need to embrace data to build something really cohesive for our members. That will include AI and automation, looking at how we use it to support members in their health and wellness, training and performance – including outside of the gym. We’ll also need to look at how we use it to enhance our internal processes, whether that’s customer service, finance, data analysis to make better decisions and so on. Certainly at NRG, we’ve brought in two tech advisories and consultancies to explore the software and functionalities
that exist in this space, that would benefit our business and our staff. All that said, it isn’t just about technology. From Netflix to Amazon to Alexa, technology has helped society tremendously from a knowledge, convenience and efficiency point of view – but on the whole it keeps you isolated. Our sector is one of the few left that encourages physical socialising. That’s something I’m very proud of at a societal level: that as a sector, we create places where people from different religions, different backgrounds, different beliefs come together to do the same thing. To enjoy health and fitness. And so although we face challenges as a sector – National Insurance contributions, business rates, VAT and so on – I like to focus on the opportunities. I’ve always been very solutions-driven. For every challenge, I see an answer.
