2021 ANNUAL COMPARISON T rial This year, we grew a comparison trial for many varieties of angelonia, celosia and lantana on the market. We chose these genera because of their consumer interest and excellent summer performance. When available, we compared seed varieties to vegetative varieties. COMBINATION PLANTERS: T hri er, F i er, S pi er, S urprise Visitors to our trial garden consistently report that one of the highlights of their visit is viewing our wide variety of custom combinations displayed in pots, baskets, and saddle planters. We typically display around 500 combinations that include a mix of breeder combinations available on the market as well as several hundred custom designed mixes. People appreciate seeing options and getting design inspiration, and it’s especially rewarding for us when customers return from year to year and report that one of our combos was a top seller for them. By Michael DeBerti, Head Grower at Mast Young Plants We use our trial garden to “think outside the box“ in terms of combination design. One of our favorite parts about designing combinations for the trial garden is including designs with unique features that you might not be used to seeing in more traditional annual combos. This year, we took our outside-the-box thinking to both combination design and combination display.
Tropical Twist. We included tropicals in a number of our annual combination planters for a surprise twist not often seen around here. This is a trend more common down south that we were curious about trying in our garden, and we love the unique look tropicals add to annual combos. Foliage Focus. Combining foliage with annuals provides a unique look and focal point. The variety of colors and textures can be used to create a beautiful foliage combo, and also as the coordinating color palette element for the entire combo. Thriller, Filler, Spiller, Surprise Everyone’s familiar with the standard thriller-filler- spiller combo design recipe, and we use this popular design rule of thumb in our combinations as well. In the trial garden, we also like to try out “surprise” varieties as thrillers, fillers, or spillers to add some interest and variety to annual combinations. The 2021 trial garden included a number of combos with some ‘surprise’ elements:

Perennial Power. Using perennials in combos opens up another world of textures and flower forms. Many more first-year flowering perennials are available now as compared with several years ago, and this opens up additional possibilities for textures, foliage, and flower forms to mix with annuals. Leucanthemum, for example, provides additional options if you’re looking for a daisy.

Leveling Up Your Display Another look we trialed in the garden this year was the double-decker combo display. We love the added height this gives the combos, and garden visitors liked looking at combos from different angles. Double decker combos could work well in large spaces, in places where you’d like the focal point higher than a pot typically is, and in spaces where you’re trying to create an especially unique look. We encourage our garden visitors to do what we do – go ahead and just try it if you’re curious about novel combinations or display ideas. Some of our favorite combinations of the season came from our ‘surprise’ additions. You might find that you surprise yourself when you try out your own thriller-filler-spiller combinations!

GARDEN TRIALS A dvantage: SUMMER SURVIVORS Growers nationwide have continued to report strong consumer demand for plants that beautify backyards and patios, leading to new opportunities for retailers to attract new customers and strengthen relationships with loyal customers. Providing consumers with excellent products that deliver high value is one strategy for attracting and retaining loyal customers. Healthy plants, vibrant colors and patterns, and a mix of longtime customer favorites alongside exciting new varieties can attract customer interest and drive sales at retail. Offering plants that continue to look healthy and vibrant throughout the entire season provides customers a high value return on their investment that in turn encourages an ongoing relationship with their trusted grower.
Given the importance of providing consumers with a strong return on their plant investment, we carried our trial garden evaluations through to the end of September with the goal of identifying “summer survivor” varieties. The MYP “summer survivor” seal of approval confirms that these varieties exhibited healthy plant habit and beautiful flowers from the beginning of the season until the very end, weathering periods along the way of extreme heat, pounding rain, and gusty winds that are all part of Michigan summers. We’re impressed with the strength and beauty of these summer survivors, and this trial provides confirmation you can trust that you can confidently offer these varieties to customers seeking plants with season-long beauty. All photos shown here were taken in week 36 of 2021. Providing you with summer survivor selections is one of the many benefits of MYP’s extensive trialing program and annual trial garden. MYP conducts year-long greenhouse trials that culminate with our summer garden trials. Observing and evaluating plants and series throughout their entire life cycles allow us to fully understand the ideal growing conditions and unique characteristics of the varieties we offer in our program. Life-cycle trials also enable us to confidently provide information to growers, so they’re able to select plants that truly meet their needs based on garden-condition trials and not just from a glossy picture in a catalog.
New Guinea Impatiens New for 2022, Interspecific New Guinea Impatiens Spectra™ Bright Red and Spectra™ Orange from Syngenta Flowers North America is bred to tolerate both sun and shade. The pots pictured here grew in full sun in our trial garden and produced vibrant blooms throughout the entire season. This series boasts large flowers and blooms early for a New Guinea impatiens.

Petunia We trialed over 150 petunia varieties, and five of those varieties earn the summer survivor designation.
