CHANGING THE GAME

RO•SHAM•BO CREATIVE

There’s a rebranded marketing and advertising agency in Rapid City that’s “ready to rock” the marketing game. A&B Business Solutions acquired Robert Sharp & Associates (an agency with over 30 years of experience) after A&B owner Dennis Aanenson wanted the ability to provide his customers with marketing services. “Dennis has always lived by the belief that if A&B can’t solve your problem, he will find someone who can,” said vice president of marketing of A&B Business Solutions Angela Avila . “He told me about his vision and it made complete sense to me. So I jumped on board, and at the turn of 2024, we proudly expanded into the marketing and advertising sector.” The acquisition followed, and the past year- and-a-half has been filled with transitions like a change in leadership, investments in tools and resources to better service their clients, and a rebrand to represent the agency’s “new vision and commitment to cutting-edge creative and advertising services.”

The rebrand was unveiled this year as Ro•Sham•Bo Creative .

Avila became the chief operation officer of the agency and has been collaborating with the team for six months on the rebrand. “It really was invigorating and gave us all a goal to work on together. I made it clear to the team that no ideas were off limits, and the creative energy and enthusiasm followed,” described Avila. “The collaboration has been amazing.” After presenting the original concepts to a focus group, Avila recalls how they had to go back to the drawing board. “It fell flat. Truthfully it was the best thing we could have done,” she said. Following the focus group, Avila started brainstorming and began thinking of the term Ro•Sham•Bo and how it was a version of Rock Paper Scissors when she was growing up. “I started researching and it occurred to me that the game of Rock Paper Scissors, while seemingly simple, is really about strategy, observation, and staying one step ahead of the competition,” said Avila. “It really was a great metaphor for what we do with marketing. I brought it to the team I had been working on the rebrand with and they were all in.”

ANGELA AVILA

“Ro•Sham•Bo Creative is more than just a workplace; it is a vibrant community where I am committed to seeing our team thrive, innovate, and make a meaningful impact.”

The Ro•Sham•Bo Creative team currently has over 140 years of combined experience in the industry and consists of designers, web developers, digital experts, and sales and creative strategists. “The best part is we all leverage each other’s skillsets to get the best result,” said Avila. “Everyone is encouraged to share creative and strategic ideas, and we choose what is best for our client based on their goals.” Services include brand strategy, design, digital and programmatic advertising, SEO, media placement, social media management, event marketing, and more (see page 16). A recent campaign the Ro•Sham•Bo team collaborated on was the 2025 Black Hills Stock Show marketing. “The creative was on point, and our client had three sold out shows during the event,” said Avila. Other clients vary across many industries, but Ro•Sham•Bo Creative primarily focuses on education, healthcare, tourism and hospitality, events, retail, construction, and B2B industries.

ANGELA AVILA “Our designer, Reba Sabo , came back with a brand and logo design shortly after our brainstorming, and as soon as I saw that, I knew we had it.”

Along with the rebrand, the agency changed locations after the acquisition, moving from Canyon Lake Drive to a temporary, “funky” space on Kansas City Street next to sister companies Cask and Cork Distributing and A&B Business Solutions. The workspace’s centerpiece is a large neon sign of their logo, where you can often find front desk greeter, Liko , the Welsh Corgi . “We have plans to add some more touches over the coming months, but we are really settling in,” said Avila. “Longterm, we are looking to create a space that houses our family of businesses all under one roof.” If 2025 is a reflection of the longterm, Avila says the future looks bright. “As a team we established several goals to focus on in 2025, and we are well on our way,” she said. “Everything from our rebrand, to our client journey and experience, to our community involvement all the way to our financial KPIs. It’s already been a great year for us, and we are excited for the future and for our clients’ futures, as well.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT ROSHAMBO CREATIVE.COM+

“There isn’t a single artistic identity that defines South Dakota. It’s perhaps best to think of it more as an artistic landscape—as art in South Dakota is as diverse as the state’s geography,” said South Dakota Art Museum director Donna Merkt . The South Dakota Art Museum honors the foundational visions that have shaped the museum, from notable contributors to generous artistic efforts. The newly-debuted exhibition, The Founding Gifts , not only communicates gratitude for the

works and artists, but celebrates the contextual history behind each gift and each piece of art. The exhibition has three parts, including Harvey Dunn’s paintings, Ben Reifel’s personal collection of Plains art, and the South Dakota General Federation of Women’s Club’s ( GFWC ) art collection. Merkt says the idea for The Founding Gifts exhibition began with a conversation about Harvey Dunn’s original gift of art to South Dakota State College , now South Dakota State University ( SDSU ), in

1950. The origin of the museum was founded with education at its core, and generosity that felt meaningful to honor. “As we approached the 75th anniversary of that moment, our curatorial team began discussing a commemorative exhibition,” said Merkt. She continued, “The concept quickly expanded as we reflected on other foundational contributions—gifts rooted not in wealth or prestige, but in a shared belief in the power of art to educate, honor, and connect.”

The lasting impact of Harvey Dunn, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs gifts, and Ben Reifel continues to echo at the museum and across the planet. Merkt says Reifel’s vision helped shape values and approach, promoting a more inclusive and comprehensive representation of artistic expression. “Benjamin Reifel's election as the first Oceti Sakowin tribal citizen to the U.S. Congress in 1960 was a groundbreaking achievement, not only for Native American representation, but also for his impactful contributions to the arts and humanities,” added Merkt. Reifel was an advocate for the establishment of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts . Merkt says this demonstrates his devotion to cultural development, education, and the arts. He also notably served as the board president for the SD Art Museum. “The same year he joined the board, Reifel attended a board meeting with a suitcase full of precious objects from his personal collection,” said Merkt. An Advocate for Art Ben Reifel donated 19 items to the South Dakota Art Museum. Pieces include a tablecloth and napkins embroidered by Nellie (He Dog) Black Crow ( Rosebud Sioux ). Four Oscar Howe paintings included in the exhibition were transferred to the Museum from the Bureau of Indian Affairs under Reifel’s stewardship.

“Though art is a reflection of humanity, it is too often separated from its original context once it enters a museum. Preserving artwork and objects is vital—but preserving and sharing the stories behind them is equally important.” Donna Merkt

After his passing, descendants solidified the donations as a permanent gift, ensuring Native art holds a prominent place in the museum's collections, Merkt adds. “All the works represent a wide range of Oceti Sakowin expression, from traditional methods and iconography to techniques, symbols, and materials shaped by the impact of colonization and forced assimilation,” said Merkt. Reifel’s actions aided in fostering an environment where Native art is presented in

conversation Euro-American art and art from other cultures, Merkt notes. Alongside Reifel, Dunn made his mark on the artistic landscape as he translated memory onto canvas, elaborates Merkt, capturing the emotional texture of rural life in ways that resonate across time. Merkt says Dunn’s impact has been lasting and profound on artists not just in the state, but around the world during the Golden Age of Illustration .

Dunn started his journey on a South Dakota farm in 1884—a life steeped in the rigors of homesteading, Merkt elaborates. As he made his way into the world of art, resilience, determination, and characteristics of the pioneer spirit were exemplified. “While much of his work captures both the ideals and hardships of prairie life, his Founding Gift also includes illustrations of stories referencing global cultures, as well as depictions of wartime experiences,” said Merkt.

“Women in Dunn’s works are not swooning ornaments; they are hard at work, contributing equally to the success of the homestead.” Donna Merkt

Although homesteading is depicted in his work, it’s not romanticized, Merkt adds. His paintings honor the complexity of life while focusing on hardship, community, longing, and resilience, illustrating what life felt like at the time. Merkt points out that as we gain understanding of the grounded truth of homesteading life, we acknowledge this narrative existed alongside the forced displacement of Oceti Sakowin people. “As South Dakota art continues to evolve, contemporary artists are increasingly engaging with both sides of our legacy—honoring ancestral memory while also reckoning with the broader social and political systems that shaped our complex history,” added Merkt. The SD Art Museum’s broader range of collections started with the Founding Gift from the GFWC. The origin of the museum is directly tied to the federation. “These visionary women looked within and beyond the state’s borders for inspiring art to share with South Dakotans,” added Merkt.

The Best of the Best

According to Merkt, the best thing about being a part of the South Dakota Art Museum is: “Its mission aligns perfectly with my personal purpose. The art museum’s mission—to inspire creativity, connect people, and enrich lives through art. It’s the purpose I serve and the work that I, in many ways, have been doing my entire life.”

“Dunn’s trajectory from humble beginnings to artistic prominence mirrors the tenacity and self- reliance emblematic of the homesteaders he so vividly portrayed in his work.” Donna Merkt

Founded in 1900, the SD chapter of the federation assembled a collection of original artworks and objects aimed to inspire appreciation for the arts, Merkt elaborates. Before the museum’s conception, the collected art traveled across South Dakota, bringing fine art to communities with little to no access to the arts. “Their dedicated efforts in acquiring artwork, advocating for a dedicated building, and leading fundraising initiatives

ultimately led to the formal establishment of the South Dakota Art Museum through codified law in 1957,” revealed Merkt. On May 31, 1970, the South Dakota Art Museum opened. Today, Merkt says the GFWC remains staunch supporters of the arts and education. “At the South Dakota Art Museum, visitors aren’t just looking at something beautiful or historic—they’re engaging with a legacy, a story, a moment in time,” said Merkt.

“ The Founding Gifts invites us to remember not just to look at the objects, but to reflect on the people and vision that brought them here… Context humanizes art—it makes it personal, relevant, and alive,” she added. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT SDSTATE.EDU/ SOUTH-DAKOTA- ART-MUSEUM+

The Sioux Falls Zoo & Aquarium we can't wait

After combining forces in 2023, the Great Plains Zoo and the Butterfly House & Aquarium of Sioux Falls have been hard at work on a “rezoovenation.” “Our planned projects—including the butterfly garden, aquarium, and education center—resonate deeply with the community, not only because they enrich the quality of life in our region, but also because they drive tourism in southeastern South Dakota and deliver significant economic benefits,” said Sioux Falls Zoo & Aquarium COO Audrey Otto-Pepper . To help bring this vision to life, T. Denny Sanford donated $25 million the summer of 2024 and encouraged the community to match his gift. When this gift is matched, he promised to provide an additional $10 million to help continue the efforts of the campus revitalization. Dubbed the We Can’t Wait Campaign , the funds not only go towards this new vision, but also will rejuvenate outdated exhibits, like the current penguin, giraffe, and red wolf habitats.

New additions include a 350,000-gallon shark reef aquarium with a tunnel experience, jellyfish, corals and other exotic species, a reimagined butterfly garden, and a modern education center serving four times more learners of all ages. The new additions will create an interactive experience with guests. Otto-Pepper says this was very important to both her and Great Plains Zoo CEO Becky Dewitz , as they are former educators. “In the aquarium, for example, children will learn through play with mangrove trees, crawling through roots and tunnels and into a dome with near-shore fish and invertebrates swimming up to say hello,” said Dewitz. Other immersive elements include the new penguin habitat bringing guests “nose to beak” through the viewing window and the butterfly garden having tropical butterflies landing directly on visitors.

During the quiet phase of the campaign in 2023 and 2024, the Sioux Falls Zoo & Aquarium successfully secured nearly $12 million in commitments, including over $1 million in contributions from their board of directors. In November, they launched a Community Appeals campaign endorsed by the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce . “Thanks to the dedication of more than 80 volunteers, we raised over $2.3 million during a five-month period, surpassing our initial Community Appeals goal by more than $1 million,” said Otto-Pepper. Now entering the next fundraising phase with $15 million already committed, Otto-Pepper says the team is energized by the early momentum. “With such exciting developments ahead, our donors are enthusiastically rallying behind the bold vision for the future of the Sioux Falls Zoo & Aquarium,” she said.

This project will not only improve the attraction, but will make an economic and cultural impact. It is projected to increase annual attendance to more than 500,000 visitors by 2031, as well as contributing $60 million to the local economy each year. The Great Plains Zoo’s most recent additions at the campus—the Denny Sanford Family Splash Pad and the new African Lion exhibit—and a new Eastern Shores exhibit at the Butterfly House & Aquarium campus, helped increase attendance by 33% and memberships by 15% in 2024. “The Splash Pad has been an incredible summer amenity for our guests,” said Dewitz. “We’ve also focused on creating species-specific habitats that exceed AZA ( Association of Zoo & Aquariums ) standards, with renovations to the black bear exhibit (most of it behind the scenes to accommodate the bears better) and a new African lion building – with much more to come.”

Now, Loghan doesn’t just walk. She dances in the Miracle Network Dance Marathon, jumps around trampoline parks and wanders through her neighborhood hunting for ant hills. Graduating from physical therapy was a major milestone, but Loghan’s experience with Sanford Children’s isn’t over. She still attends weekly occupational and speech therapy at Sanford Pediatric Therapy Services. There, her connections with her therapists, Annika Overgaard, OTD, and Ellison Fedders, SLP, make the hard work seem like fun. During her appointments, Loghan works on language skills and life skills, like zipping up her coat. Right now, Loghan uses a mixture of her voice and sign language to communicate. “She loves them,” says Breanna. “She sees Ellie and Annika back- to-back. And then she crashes.”

Breanna has big dreams for Loghan, and they are working hard as a family to help them all come true. “Every time she meets a goal in one of her therapies, we do something fun to celebrate,” says Breanna. “And then we start working toward something new.”

When Breanna Morgan’s daughter, Loghan, was 4 months old, she needed surgery to address a congenital diaphragmatic hernia. It’s a serious condition that, if left untreated, can cause crowding in the chest cavity and underdeveloped lungs. During a follow up appointment, Loghan’s gastrointestinal doctor pointed out a few signs of a genetic disorder and recommended genetic testing. “We hadn’t even thought about that,” says Breanna. Testing at Sanford Imagenetics revealed that Loghan had RERE syndrome, and she was one of just 30 people worldwide to be diagnosed with the condition.

RERE syndrome is characterized by a variety of neurodevelopmental concerns that can affect the eyes, ears, heart, kidneys and more. Some kids can also have autism spectrum disorder, behavioral issues or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Breanna was told Loghan may never walk or talk. But Breanna was determined do everything she could to prove otherwise. With a diagnosis, Loghan could start therapy. She started going four to five times a week, bouncing between physical, occupational and speech therapies. Breanna took home what she learned during each session to keep working with Loghan.

“You have to take what they’re doing and implement it at home,” says Breanna. As Loghan grew, so did her skills. She went from assisted crawling to assisted standing. Over the next few years, Loghan used ankle braces, a walker and a harness to improve her mobility. Breanna and Loghan’s physical therapist, Grant Boltjes, PT, were on the same page when it came to Loghan’s limits. “When she started blowing raspberries, we could tell she was working hard,” says Breanna. “But she was pushing through it.” And all that hard work paid off. Loghan graduated from physical therapy at 3 years old. “That was a really great moment not only for her, but for the whole family,” Breanna says.

Avery

The movie Out of My Mind released at the end of 2024, but it already made it to the top of 10-year- old Avery Hill’s list of favorites. It follows the story of Melody, a young girl with cerebral palsy who uses a wheelchair and medi- talker. Because people underestimate her, she has to prove that she’s not that different from the other kids. And as a young girl with cerebral palsy, Avery can relate. Avery was born premature at just 29 weeks. A few days into her stay at the Sanford Children’s Boekelheide Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, her doctors discovered she was suffering from two brain bleeds. It would take two months of around-the-clock care to help her heal. As a nurse herself, Avery’s mom, Mindy Hill, knew in the back of her mind that cerebral palsy was a possibility because of Avery’s premature birth and brain bleeds. “But everything kind of goes out the window when it’s your kid,” says Mindy. “I know how things work, but when it’s personal, it’s easy to just forget it all.”

“At those early follow-up appointments, we were told she was growing and doing well,” says Mindy. “So her diagnosis felt like a shock.”

“We got right in with Dr. Bauer after Avery was born,” says Mindy. “He has been incredible.” Barry Bauer, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician with a breadth of expertise that makes him an asset to families like the Hills who have children with complex care needs. “As a general pediatrician, it’s my responsibility to understand my patients' medical conditions or developmental concerns, as well as their family and social situation, so that I can provide the best care possible,” says Dr. Bauer. “He is incredibly knowledgeable,” says Mindy. “Even when it comes to things that are just specific to Avery.”

The first years of Avery’s life were full of specialty care appointments. She saw neonatologists,

gastroenterologists, physical therapists, cardiovascular specialists, surgeons, neurologists and more. As they made their way through the web

All primary care providers strive to understand what makes each patient unique and, especially in Avery’s case, that understanding is crucial. “As a child with complex needs grows, additional issues may arise,” says Dr. Bauer. “Having a primary care physician who is familiar with them and their health history can go a long way.”
