MAY 2025

Some moms like to go all out with a big fancy brunch. Others want chocolates or gifts. But, for my mom, it’s all about time together — just relaxing, playing with the grandkids, or tending to her treasured rose garden. My mother has taught me many things over the years, like the value of a strong work ethic and staying motivated, but she also imparted to me that what matters in life isn’t always big and fancy. It is about showing up, helping others, putting in the effort, and making the most of our time together. Why My Mom’s Green Thumb (and Big Heart) Inspires Me Every Day A MOTHER’S LOVE IN FULL BLOOM

If it’s not cards, my mom loves her crossword puzzles and word searches. In fact, that word search that appears in this newsletter every month was inspired by my mom’s love of the game. Trust me, she always grabs a copy so she can play. As long as loved ones are near, my mom is happy. We often visit and hang out, perhaps joined by my three older sisters, their children, and mine. We love going on nice walks together or out to grab a bite. My parents recently visited for the weekend, In honor of my mother’s green thumb this month, we want to add a little color to your mom’s yard! With Mother’s Day right around the corner, I have so many happy memories of my mom to celebrate. From my childhood days spent helping her and my dad in the yard to simply cherishing the beautiful gift my parents gave me when they adopted me, she continues to be a strong support in my life today.

and we all went to WonderLab, a tiny children’s museum dedicated to exploring science. All of us grown-ups had at least the same or even more fun as the kids, and my parents were just happy to be a part of another warm memory with their family. Though my mom wants very little in material things or gifts, I know a new flower or plant will always bring her joy. She has a map of the yard in her mind with the perfect spot to grow something new. Even if your mom isn’t the rose-planting queen like mine, landscaping services

From the time I was about 7, I was digging in the dirt with my parents, always helping them with their

landscaping. Mom diligently cared for her roses, and I am lucky to have learned from a master gardener like her. I think she could probably grow anything. She grew a passion for plants in me, which has become a happy career I love. You can learn a lot from gardening beside a parent. My mother always taught me that when a task needs to be done, you give it your very best, even when you don’t feel like doing it. It’s a testament to her valuable work ethic and just one of many examples of how much she likes to help people. In my eyes, that’s her biggest superpower — her love of people. She loves socializing with family, friends, her church, and anyone who needs a little care. For some 30 years, my mom went to the juvenile detention center every Saturday to play cards with the young people in custody there. It didn’t matter to her that they were “troublemakers.”

or a yard makeover can make a wonderful Mother’s Day gift.

Getting your kids outdoors to enjoy nature is a goal worth pursuing, but smartphones, video games, and social media have made it far more challenging in recent years. We celebrated Earth Day on April 22, and a nature walk is a great way to keep the appreciation for nature going. Planning games, creative projects, and other challenges to engage them during your hike can get kids involved from the start. Choose a trail that isn’t too difficult, and allow your children to wander and explore. If your children have a creative flair, encourage them to collect dried leaves, pieces of bark, seed pods, sticks, and other items to use in a collage. For adventurous kids, you can draft an age-appropriate list for a scavenger hunt to keep them from growing bored on the walk. You can include different insects native to your area, specific colors of leaves, and types of flowers, and you can even have them keep an ear out for different bird calls. Challenge your kids to make a list of all the plants or animals they can identify while they walk. Apps like Leafsnap help you identify plants using photos of their leaves or other parts. Additionally, the Arbor Day Foundation offers an online step-by-step guide at ArborDay.org for identifying a tree by its leaves. Keep the learning going by having your kids record their distance based on trail signs or a map app on their phones and calculate their average speed. You could also invite your youngsters to become cartographers, tracing the trail and surroundings on paper, including landmarks, rivers, and lakes. Older kids can add topographical information using their phones or an altitude app such as Altimeter or My Altitude. Hiking is a fantastic activity to help your kids appreciate the outdoors rather than their phone screens, but being in nature takes energy. Remember to pack snacks and a water bottle before you leave, or pack a favorite picnic meal to savor the rewards of exploring the outdoors! HELP YOUR KIDS FALL IN LOVE WITH HIKING Step by Step

Imagine stepping into your backyard and feeling like you’ve just entered a world-class garden where every stone, plant, and pathway brings tranquility and beauty into your day. From the serene simplicity of Zen gardens to the grand floral displays of European estates, famous garden styles from around the globe can inspire your home oasis. Whether you want a peaceful retreat with raked gravel and bonsai or a colorful paradise, you don’t need a plane ticket to experience the garden grandeur. You just need a little creativity and a good pair of gardening gloves. BRING WORLD-CLASS GARDEN INSPIRATION HOME No Passport Required ZEN GARDENS Zen gardens are all about finding peace, serenity, and balance. This popular minimalist style features rock or gravel, sparse green plants, and earthy elements like stone statues. To bring some zen into your outdoor space, lay down some finely crushed gravel that you can rake into patterns like wavy lines that imitate a relaxing stream. These gardens are perfect for meditation, so add a nice stone bench where you can enjoy a quiet moment. Illuminate the area with gentle lanterns and incorporate traditional plants like bamboo, bonsai, and ferns. COTTAGE GARDENS If you want to feel transported to the English countryside, you can take some style cues from traditional cottage gardens. Known for their free- flowing arrangements of flowers and edible plants, these gardens create a burst of color and fragrance to your home. Plant rose bushes, sprawling lavender, and tasty pears or apples that spill over quaint pathways of pavers. You want it to look unplanned, so avoid too much uniformity. You can mimic the cottage vibe by including trellises, fences, and arches in the space. SPANISH GARDENS With their rich history and Mediterranean charm, Spanish gardens blend lush greenery, terracotta tones, and timeless architectural elements to create an inviting, sun-drenched retreat. Think of plants that combine the desert and the sea, like cactus and colorful bougainvilleas. You can play with pastels and natural touches like clay pavers and pots. This style is perfect for incorporating subtle water features or a warm brick fireplace or chiminea. No matter which garden style speaks to you, Anthony’s Lawn Care can help bring your dream yard to life. Contact us today, and let’s turn your outdoor space into something extraordinary.

A Journey Back in Time Escape to the Azores

If a trek through timeless volcanic landscapes dotted with crater lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs, plus access to awe-inspiring marine life sounds inviting, the Azores may be the vacation spot for you! The Azores are an increasingly popular tourist destination, often called “the Hawaii of Europe” for their remote mid-ocean location and volcanic origins. The archipelago encompasses nine major islands 1,000 miles off the coast of Portugal and is one of the best whale-watching sites in the world. Visitors should plan their trip from the end of April to the beginning of May to view larger migratory species, such as the blue whale. The rocky shorelines of the Azores ascend as high as 7,713 feet atop the Ponta de Pico on the island of Pico. The islands’ untamed beauty offers plenty of outdoor activities, from kayaking to hiking.
