GAS INDUSTRY
A NINGA ADVISORY PANEL WILL BE ESTABLISHED IN 2025 TO ENSURE THE GAS INDUSTRY IS REPRESENTED IN NI’S ENERGY STRATEGY, SAYS PHOENIX ENERGY GENERAL SALES MANAGER NEIL MCCRACKEN… NINGA: Continuing to support gas industry development
It’s been almost 30 years since Natural Gas first arrived in Northern Ireland with the rollout of Phoenix’s infrastructure in Greater Belfast. Recognised as a solution to NI’s growing fuel poverty problems and offering consumers an alternative to their inefficient coal or oil-fired heating systems, it’s perhaps no surprise to see such rapid growth of the network. The local industry quickly embraced the opportunity to reskill to be able to meet demand, leading to the emergence of new training providers, product manufacturers and downstream installation companies in the NI marketplace. NINGA was quickly established to provide a platform for engagement and knowledge sharing across the evolving gas industry. Monthly NINGA networking forums at La Mon Hotel became a staple to ensure the industry was best placed to serve customers’ needs. Today, the industry has evolved significantly, with gas networks covering the majority of NI’s largest towns and cities, and gas overtaking oil as consumers’ fuel of choice across the networks. It’s fantastic to see so many of the local businesses who were involved in the establishment of the industry continuing to thrive and share their knowledge with new emerging companies. An estimated 3,000 people now work in NI’s gas industry, championing energy efficiency and delivering lower-carbon heating solutions. With over 330,000 gas boilers installed, the industry has prevented more than 14 million tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere – I believe this leaves the local industry well placed to deliver low carbon heating solutions in the drive to net zero. Whilst NI’s Energy Strategy continues to be shaped by the NI Executive, there is no doubt there will be opportunities for our independent trade network to again adapt, upskill and grow to enable the rollout of future energy efficiency and heating technologies.
Neil McCracken.
The benefits of a whole-house solution (completing insulation upgrades at the time of heating upgrades) is increasingly now recognised as best practice. NI’s unique opportunities to utilise biomethane and hydrogen alongside the emergence of hybrid heating technologies offer an exciting and pragmatic set of solutions that provide consumers with the opportunity to decarbonise in a manner that is least disruptive. I am pleased to confirm that the establishment of a NINGA Advisory Panel in 2025 will help to direct engagement platforms and ensure the independent gas industry can contribute to policy discussions and the design of NI’s future Energy Strategy. I will be reaching out to NINGA members to bring together a panel in mid spring. Whilst these exciting opportunities
will shape the future direction of the industry, we should not lose sight of what we continue to contribute now, with an estimated 8,000 properties beginning their decarbonisation journey by connecting to the gas network for the first time this year. Collaboration and knowledge sharing have been a core pillar of NINGA for almost 30 years. This year, NINGA will be hosting two large industry events at Titanic Hotel, supported by a series of smaller breakfast and trade counter events throughout the year. I am also delighted to confirm the return of an industry gala ball in November, and I’ll share more details soon. Your involvement and input at these events are vital to ensure the industry continues to
evolve and grow together. www.phoenixenergyni.com

COPPER INDUSTRIES WORKED AROUND THE CLOCK TO REPLACE AN ANTIQUATED STEAM-BASED SET UP WITH TWO 5,000L COPPER HOT WATER GENERATORS AT MID ULSTER HOSPITAL…
A quiet transformation from steam to copper
There’s a quiet sort of pride that comes from getting the job done right. No drama, no noise, just proper work being done by good people, all behind the scenes. At Mid Ulster Hospital, a heating system that had served since 1952 was finally put to rest. Not because it failed, but because the future wouldn’t wait. Hospitals can’t afford breakdowns, it’s as simple as that. With many different departments, hundreds of staff and a steady flow of patients every single day, failure is not an option. When hot water falters somewhere as important as a hospital, you can’t just fix the symptoms - you must get to the root of the issue. And this wasn’t just any ordinary system. This was a steam-based setup installed shortly after Queen Elizabeth’s coronation - barely updated over the seven decades since its install, yet carrying the entire load of a busy, modern hospital. Yes, gas boilers had been added along the way, but it was essentially patching an aging vessel and hoping for the best. The writing was clearly on the wall. The hospital desperately needed a system that could deliver real performance, absolute reliability, and significant carbon savings - all without disrupting daily operations. That’s when Copper Industries and LB Cylinders got the call. But here was the challenge. It had to be done in winter. In a live hospital. With zero downtime. So, we brought a solid plan. And plenty of warm clothing. The team installed two 5,000L copper hot water generators - one indirect, one direct - with a standby boiler for added resilience. It

Transforming Mid Ulster Hospital
WHAT REALLY MADE THE DIFFERENCE?
wasn’t just plug and play. We spent three days on site, working round the clock, problem-solving everything from pump resistance to isolation coil complications. And when everything finally came together, the transformation was remarkable. The new system cut out the long duct runs that used to bleed heat. Boilers fired less frequently, saving substantial amounts of gas. And the hospital could move away from steam dependency. That shift alone dramatically improved efficiency overnight. But energy savings were just the beginning. Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa risk? Gone. The copper system keeps water constantly moving, with no storage tanks or dead legs in the piping. That’s absolutely crucial in a healthcare environment, where patient safety simply isn’t negotiable. Then there’s the environmental benefit. The old steam system relied on heavy oil. The new copper-based setup is fired by gas - cleaner, more responsive and far better aligned with sustainability targets. By 2030, the hospital is on track to exceed its 30% energy reduction goal. And by 2050, it will be well-positioned to achieve net zero. David Anderson, Energy and Environment Manager at Mid Ulster Hospital, said, “We’re already seeing the benefits. The numbers don’t lie - it’s working and it’s putting us ahead of schedule for our 30% energy reduction target by 2030.”
- until something fails. But this project demonstrates what can be achieved when good engineering combines with careful planning and a bit of nerve. The old steam system served its purpose. But its time had come. And now? Mid Ulster Hospital has a system that’s cleaner, more efficient and fully prepared for future demands. Because sometimes progress doesn’t arrive with a bang. It arrives with copper.
The consistency. Since the system was commissioned, the hospital has experienced smooth, uninterrupted service. Hot water is available exactly where and when it’s needed - without complications or concerns. It simply works. That’s precisely what a good upgrade should do - improve everything while hardly being noticed. This is part of a larger transformation. Along with solar panels, new PVC windows and decentralised heating, this installation represents one of many quiet revolutions happening where most people never look. Hospitals are inherently complex. They don’t typically focus on infrastructure

CORK HOME SOLUTION TO REPLACE CONVENTIONAL HEATING SYSTEMS
Researchers at the International Energy Research Centre in University College Cork’s Tyndall National Institute are piloting a prototype high-capacity thermal energy storage system as part of the EU Horizon Europe-funded MiniStor project. The system collects thermal and electrical energy from the sun through solar collectors, storing it by heating up salt compounds
that create a thermochemical reaction. Heat is then released as needed through a hot water circuit and heat pump for use both in heating and in domestic hot water. A collaboration with Cork City Council and 11 other partners, it aims to reduce or remove the need for solid fuel, oil or gas-based heating systems in homes by capturing heat from the sun and storing it in an innovative, compact heat store. The MiniStor system is currently being tested at a residential site in Cork City, where it will operate for six months to assess its performance in an Irish climate. Demonstrations in Ireland, Spain, Greece and Hungary will assess adaptability across diverse climatic conditions. The project provides a scalable, sustainable model for European households aiming to reduce carbon footprints and energy costs. www.tyndall.ie
