WATCHING NOW PEOPLE

WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING? WHAT ARE YOU WEARING? CHAMPION SPORTS JOURNALIST RIKKI SWANNELL

If you’re an avid sports watcher, chances are high that you know the name Rikki Swannell. A permanent fixture in commentary boxes and on side-lines around the country, name a sport and the talented journalist has most likely covered it. A fan of everything competitive from snooker and darts, to cricket and rowing, she has also reported from no less than three Olympic Games, and is about to start packing for her fourth. I think this is your third Olympics am I right? Yes! I’ve covered two summer Olympics in the past, and one winter games. Tokyo is definitely shaping up as one to be remembered. How are you preparing for the weirdness that will be an Olympic Games held in the shadow of a pandemic? I think you just have to roll with it, and be as informed as you can be without scaring yourself. I was with the crew last night and we were talking about preparing for a worst case scenario in that it’s really restrictive, and figure it can only get better from there. It’s going to be an incredibly different Olympics to anything that’s been before, which from a journalistic point of view is kind of cool! And it looks like you may be an all-woman team of reporters from Sky New Zealand, along with Storm Purvis, Kirstie Stanway and Kristina Eddy. This is so amazing to hear, yet really shouldn’t be a big deal! It shouldn’t, but it’s great! It’s the first time I’ve been involved in an all-female line up of sports reporters and it should be exciting and a lot of fun. It’s a first time covering the Olympics for a couple of the girls, which is great for them but also a little weird given the circumstances. When you’re not watching live sport, what are you watching? I’m a binge-watcher, and have the multiple streaming services to prove it. I’ve just finished Mare of Easttown , which was amazing, and The Handmaid’s Tale . Now I’m onto Start-Up on Netflix, which initially I was unsure about but now really like.

IT’S GOING TO BE AN INCREDIBLY DIFFERENT OLYMPICS TO ANYTHING THAT’S BEEN BEFORE, WHICH FROM A JOURNALISTIC POINT OF VIEW IS KIND OF COOL!
