Ivan Finlay Awards Each year, APEGA presents the Ivan Finlay Leadership Award to undergraduate or graduate engineering or geoscience students who demonstrate leadership in equity, diversity, and inclusion in their campus or community activities. The award is named in honour of Ivan Finlay, P.Eng., FEC, an electrical engineer and APEGA’s first full- time registrar (1959–1978), who inspired the next generation with his professionalism, integrity, and innovative perspective. Congratulations to our 10 recipients for 2024, who each received an award of $1,250! Arielle O’Brian Dhir Bid Dylan Maczko Jolie Gan Maha Ead, E.I.T. Mona Ahmadirad, E.I.T. We saw an exciting shift in how we delivered our post- secondary outreach with the launch of APEGA’s Work Readiness Program. This new program prepares current students and new graduates to transition from university to the professional workplace by developing critical skills, including digital literacy, inclusive leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills. It also aligns with the competencies they will need to demonstrate when they apply for licensure with APEGA. The Work Readiness Program is free to join for current university students in engineering or geoscience programs and members-in-training. Students and institutions from across Canada expressed interest in joining, and we had more than 800 sign-ups, which far exceeded our expectations. APEGA volunteers contribute to the Work Readiness Program The Mentoring Café, which is made possible because of APEGA volunteers, is now part of the Work Readiness Program. Participants sign up for casual, 30-minute virtual meetings with volunteer mentors to ask questions about a range of topics, such as completing Work Readiness Program components and navigating the application process with APEGA. • The Mentoring Café saw a surge in use, with more than triple the number of appointments scheduled in 2024 compared to 2023. • The volunteer-supported Virtual Résumé Review program had nearly double the number of résumés submitted for review in 2024 than 2023.
