WorldSkills Regional Competitions come to TasTAFE Drysdale Hobart

TasTAFE Drysdale is providing opportunities for young people working and training in hospitality to test their skills, hosting the 2024 WorldSkills Australia Regional Competitions.

On July 24, Drysdale Hobart ran competitions in three disciplines – Patisserie, Retail Butchery and Cookery.

World Skills competitions are Australia’s biggest vocational education and excellence competitions. Every two years, more than 500 regional competitions are held in 34 regions across the country. They see vocationally trained participants challenging themselves to achieve excellence against their peers in practical skills challenges designed by industry experts. A Restaurant Service competition is scheduled for September 3 at Drysdale Launceston; the Butchery and Cookery competitions will continue on September 4 in Devonport and September 12 in Launceston respectively.

Congratulations also to silver medallist Job Chapman (Trevallyn Gourmet Bakery), and Montana Jago (Banjo’s Bakehouse Latrobe), who won bronze.

But in the completed Patisserie competition, Eve Charlesworth took home the gold medal.

Eve is a TasTAFE-trained apprentice who is studying a Certificate III in Patisserie, whilst completing Year 10 at school and working at Jean-Pascal Patisserie in Hobart. In just six hours at WorldSkills, Eve produced chocolate eclairs, cream puffs, a strawberry-and-cream sponge cake, Viennese biscuits, Swiss rolls and more… all beautifully crafted from scratch. A panel of four expert judges – TasTAFE teachers Scott Townsend, Jason Mizzen and Mike Goddard, plus Alice Loone from Coles Meadow Mews in Launceston – assessed the competitors’ efforts against a long list of
