Tourism Tasmania’s Acting CEO Vanessa Pinto on the vital role tourism plays for our state.
The Story of Tourism belongs to us all. It is our goal to empower everyone to be advocates for Tasmania’s tourism industry and all the benefits it brings. Visit tourismtasmania.com.au/storyoftourism to learn more about the importance and value it brings to the state including key insights you can share with your networks. As we start preparing for the peak season ahead, we invite you to join us as we present Pre Season industry updates around the state in mid-September. Myself, along with our Chief Marketing Officer, Lindene Cleary and other members of the Tourism Tasmania team will provide an update on upcoming marketing campaigns, including a sneak peak of our latest Come Down For Air campaign and what to expect for the months ahead. If you haven’t already ready registered, please visit tourismtasmania.com.au to find an event in your region. This will be my last time contributing to the THA Hospitality review as Acting CEO of Tourism Tasmania, with Sarah Clark returning from leave in late October 2024. It’s been a privilege to play a part in such an important industry for the state – I’ve certainly learnt a lot and hope I’ve given just as much back. I look forward to continuing to be an advocate for tourism in Tasmania well beyond my tenure in this role.
We know that this winter has been challenging for many businesses within our hospitality sector. It’s served as a reminder of the vital role tourism plays in Tasmania, and how important it is for us to continue working together to drive visitors to the state, and locals into our regions. Tourism is one of Tasmania’s oldest and most important industries, with visitors spending $3.6 billion annually in Tasmania, and locals contributing $1.13b on overnight trips 1 ; helping to support one in eight Tasmanian jobs 2 . At this year’s Tasmanian Tourism Conference (21 August) we were excited to launch the Story of Tourism. While tourism has certainly grown in strength and vibrancy over the last decade, it is not new to Tasmania, in fact, we’ve been inviting people to our island for over 130 years. The Story of Tourism reflects on our industry – how far we’ve come and where we are going in the future. This body of work, which includes a video, factsheet and toolkit, is also an opportunity to highlight the many ways tourism benefits our state, not least of which supporting the many small businesses and entrepreneurs, creating jobs, and strengthening our economy. The amenities visitors seek also benefit Tasmanians, from public infrastructure, venues and hospitality offerings, festivals and events creating more vibrant cities, towns, and communities. Increased demand for holiday travel to Tasmania also means we benefit from more flight choices and more affordable access to and from our island.
Wishing you all the best for the season ahead.
Acting CEO Vanessa Pinto
