LADSTONE, NJ — Loring Consulting En- gineers has garnered the prestigious national Honor Award in the American Coun- cil of Engineering Compa- nies’ (ACEC) 2016 Engineer- ing Excellence Awards Compe- tition for its innovative building systems design work on The Willow School, an independent, 440 student, K-8 educational facility in Gladstone, NJ. The school’s new 22,000 s/f Health, Wellness and Nutrition Cen- ter received a 2016 Diamond Award in building/technol- ogy systems from ACEC’s New York chapter in March, and went on to be named one of the top 24 projects in the national ACEC engineering competi- tion. Bestowed by a panel of 28 judges representing a cross sec- tion of industry, government, academia and media, Loring’s Honor Award was announced on April 19 inWashington. D.C. Completed in April 2015, The Willow School’s new Health, Wellness and Nutrition Center is expected to be the country’s first educational building to obtain LEED Platinum status as well as certification from the Living Building Challenge, the most advanced measure of sus- tainability. These certification processes are now in progress, and preliminary building per- formance data confirms confor- mance with Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) goals. The Health, Wellness and Nutrition Center represents the third sustainable, leading-edge building Loring has designed at The Willow School campus. Phase 1, a 14,000 s/f primary (K-6) classroom facility built in 2004, was the first LEED Gold certified educational building in the U.S. and was called “the greenest building in New Jer- sey” at the time ( The New York Times , 12/29/2004). Phase 2, completed in 2007, comprised conversion and expansion of an existing barn into an Arts Barn that houses classrooms and a multifunctional movement studio. The Arts Barn was the first LEED Platinum certified school building in New Jersey. The Health, Wellness and Nutrition Center project scope included commercial and teach- ing kitchens, dining hall, move- ment and performing arts space, a health and wellness room, and middle school class- rooms. Acting as Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Pro- tection, Telecommunications G

and Security Engineer, Loring achieved Net Zero Energy sta- tus for the Center through the use of natural daylighting and highly efficient systems, includ- ing a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heat pump system that allows for simultaneous heating and cooling in different zones; a dedicated heat recovery type exhaust/make-up air unit for the commercial kitchen; a roof- mounted photovoltaic system that will produce more energy than the building consumes an- nually; instantaneous and heat pump-type electric domestic water heaters; and a building

energy management system that signals occupants when windows can be opened for natural ventilation and auto- matically adjusts HVAC system output to occupancy levels. The building was constructed with a super-high performance build- ing envelope and extensive natural daylighting, and has a rainwater harvesting system. Despite very restricted spaces driven by the building’s timber framing and super-insulated walls and ceilings, the mechani- cal and electrical systems were seamlessly integrated into the building. n
