By Mary Molle, Jersey Infrared Consultants Overview of commercial & industrial infrared thermography applications

nfrared thermography is a non-contact, non- destructive test method that utilizes a therma l image r t o detect, dis- p l a y a n d record ther- m a l p a t - t e rns and t e m p e r a - tures across the surface of an object. Infrared, or IR, thermog- raphy may be used in any situation where knowledge of thermal patterns and temperatures provide mean- ingful data about a sys- tem, object or process. Ther- mography is widely used in industry for predictive maintenance, condition as- sessment, quality assurance, and forensic investigations of electrical, mechanical and structural systems. Other applications include, but are not limited to: law enforce- ment, firefighting, search and rescue, and medical and veterinary sciences. Applications and Benefits Some common applications and benefits for commercial and/or industrial facilities include the following: Reports At the completion of an In- frared Survey, a clear, easy- to-understand report should be provided in written and/or electronic format. Based on current industry standards, reports should contain the include: • Introduction • Thermographer’s Com- ments • Description of the work completed and/or findings • Detailed description of problems or areas of interest • Infrared thermograms in color and/or black and white, along with control photo- graphs • Avoided Cost Analysis Re- port if appropriate (Electrical Surveys) • Drawing of the findings if appropriate (Roof, Un- derground Pipe or Building Envelope Surveys) Electrical Systems Sur- veys - identify loose connec- tions, faulty equipment, un- balanced loads, overloaded equipment. Surveys are performed with the equipment under Mary Molle I

envelope. Surveys are typi- cally performed as part of a building assessment, foren- sic investigation of leaks, or LEED Certification. Steam System Surveys - InfraSonic Steam Surveys utilize infrared and ultrason- ic technologies to provide a highly accurate test method to detect faulty steam traps. With an average industry failure rate exceeding 50% of installed traps and the cost of energy, InfraSonic™ Steam Surveys provide a high ROI. Standards and Guidelines There are a number of

load with the goal of identi- fying of a potential problem before it fails and interrupts normal activity. Flat Roof Moisture Sur- veys - identify the presence and location of moisture in the roofing system. The Survey looks at 100% of the roof surface and provides documentation to be used in a facility’s roof maintenance and/or assessment. Building Envelope Sur- veys - locate air infiltration or exfiltration, or areas of moisture in the building

standards and specifications published for infrared ther- mography. Currently, stan- dards exist for the certifica- tion of personnel, operation of equipment, and inspec- tions of electrical, mechani- cal, and structural systems. The following are the most common organizations: American Society for Non- destructive Testing (ASNT) American Society for Test- ing and Materials (ASTM) Infraspection Institute Inter- National Electrical Testing Association (NETA)

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Occupational Safety and Hea l th Admini s t rat i on (OSHA) With today’s high cost of repairs and down- time, Infrared Surveys make sense! Save time and money by incorporating our Infra- red Surveys into your vari- ous preventive maintenance programs.
